I'm assuming that the data used to send and receive it goes through the Wi-Fi connection that the hotspot has? If so, would it be possible to use a VPN on the hotspot? I'm trying to figure out how the VPN would work in this scenario. I'm using an LG LTE/Wi-Fi hotspot.

I would assume that the data sent and received through the hotspot would go through the mobile network and not through the VPN provider's network. But, in theory, you could use a VPN to secure the data transmitted between the VPN client and the VPN server as it goes through your mobile network. That's not the same as sending data through a VPN to a VPN server but maybe it would work. As long as its encrypted it doesn't matter if its through the vpn or not. Just make sure your hotspot is encrypted or you can fall victim to p0rn
I can't use VPN for other reason than the fact that my carrier doesn't support it.

The second way is by connecting your hotspot to your phone and turning on the hotspot. As you may know, your phone automatically turns on a hotspot when connected to a Wi-Fi network. This can be done by pressing and holding down the volume down and home buttons simultaneously, then selecting Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Hotspot. There are several ways to encrypt the traffic of your hotspot. For example, you could use a Wi-Fi passcode or enable encryption on your phone by pressing and holding down the volume down and home buttons simultaneously, then selecting Passcode Lock. If you do this, you'll be prompted for a passcode to use with your hotspot. You can change the passcode later from Settings > General > Passcode Lock. Or, you could use a VPN application to use your hotspot as a virtual private network (VPN) to provide secure browsing to your iPhone.
