Is Jotform really free?

Jotform is a hosted service offering users multiple integrations.

They are a free service at the moment, but does that imply anything else? Free is often something of a relative term, isn't it? I was chatting to someone at a social event recently about Jotform, and how they are basically free. He was adamant that they were not free in any way at all, and that if you want a free solution, you need to use your own hosted solution. I understand his view entirely, so when I asked my mother about Jotform, I asked her what she thought. Jotform is only free from them, according to my mother, because they were willing to go without advertising and only monetise through their referral program. While I completely understand why that is fair, I have to ask if he had heard of any of the other features that Jotform can offer, or any other potential integration methods? My guess is no, because Jotform appear to be focussing on their brand, rather than their product. The issue with this, I suspect, is that while Jotform may be providing a free solution at the moment, there is plenty they could do in the future, such as adding other integrations, more features or even just making their branding better. If you are in their referral program, then they still make money, whether you use their hosted service or your own, so they aren't doing nothing, but if you aren't in the referral program, then you are losing out on the revenue that could be generated by using one of their paid tools. I could easily be wrong about my mother, but there is absolutely no evidence on the Jotform website to support this claim that they are charging for any aspect of their service. If I have simply been led astray by my mother, then I apologise for that. In that case, I have to ask why a customer should pay to use a service, which essentially tells them to get lost, if the brand is focused around their free service.

What are you thoughts? Have you used the free version? ?
