How do I set up a VPN at home?
I need to start using the Tor Browser on my home network.
I have an Ubuntu system I use at work, but it's slow compared to the speed of my VPN which is set up using my phone and connected to a wireless router. ?
Also, I don't know anything about security and I don't want to break anything. I just want to be able to access the Internet securely from my home network, without getting blocked or filtered by anything.
Here are some tips from a computer security professional: VPN is a software solution that uses two computers or routers. The first step would be to have one computer on your local network (that has an external IP address) that acts as a gateway/router and has an external IP address as well as a second computer that is not on your local network. This computer is referred to as the 'server' in a VPN solution. The second computer that will act as the client is a computer that has the Tor browser installed on it. The first step to setup a VPN solution is to ensure that the server computer has a private IP address and that the IP address of the router that is assigned to the server computer has NAT enabled. Once you have setup the VPN solution correctly, the connection to the Internet will be encrypted between the two computers which will allow you to access the Internet securely from your home network. If you are concerned with how to set up a VPN solution, this website offers some useful information:
I'm interested in finding out more about it. I just need a good set of instructions for how to configure a VPN in Ubuntu.
The article you linked seems to be out of date and in fact refers to older versions of Ubuntu which no longer support Tor. For example, the instructions are as follows: Change torrc to use our new name, replace the server and client ports. Install the tor bundle, and restart the tor daemon. Run /etc/init.d/tor reload or /etc/init.d/tor restart
Stop the tor daemon and check to make sure its all running.
Is it cheaper to make your own VPN?
Not necessarily.
The question you have to ask yourself is do I need it? Are there things that I can get online that will be more efficient for me than having a VPN? If you have nothing else you need an internet connection so you may as well just use one. When I was in china, their vpns were all based on there own servers and you had to pay a monthly fee for that, but once you got in the server, it would show your location and you would be able to browse the net free of charge. I am not saying if you want a vpn in China is the right choice because it depends on the region you are in, for example if you are in UK, I would think it is not worth it because it will be slow.
There are services online that run off their own servers and its called paid service, you still need to have a good internet connection, like ADSL. I am not sure what VDSL can do when you are connected to a paid service but its probably going to be slower than just paying for it monthly with a paid service.
I've seen some of the Chinese made VPNs working ok (but a bit too slow). It depends on the company producing it. In some cases they only use cheap hardware in the USA and in other cases, they're using good hardware.
You may be able to get a better product if you build it yourself. There's plenty of information available.
How much do you want to spend? With one that costs 10 or 15 times that you'll most likely save enough to more than pay for it. There are cheaper ones too, but if you want to save some money, why not build your own instead of buying it. So, if you want to build your own VPN, where do you start? Do you need a router, a hardware box or is this just a software application? What will cost you? And how long will it take you to get something that works and is safe?
Can you set up a VPN for free?
In this week's episode of How to Do Everything, we're setting up a VPN.
I'll be using NordVPN because they have the best value-for-money out there and a good set of features including traffic encryption and location spoofing (a feature that's great for avoiding geo-blocking). For my setup I'm using the free VPN software OpenVPN Connect (there are other options too, we'll get to that later on). I really love this app because it makes it super easy to get your VPN working.
Getting Started. Let's start off with the basics - we're going to need some networking tools before we do anything else. Download the NordVPN app from the Google Play Store or the App Store. Once you've downloaded the app, open it and tap the Add button on the top-left. You should then see a large NordVPN logo and Your NordVPN Account button to the right. Click that.
If you're not already logged in, you'll be taken to the NordVPN login page. Enter the email address and password you want to use to log into NordVPN and you'll be logged into your account. Now we're going to create a new VPN profile. You can only create one at a time, and these profiles can be used for any account.
There are three tabs at the top of the screen - Options, Networking, and Access settings. You don't need to worry about the Access settings tab yet - that comes later.
The Networking tab has three different areas - Internet Protocol Version, IPv6, and Location spoofing. I'm going to show you how to choose the type of networking you want from here, but if you're unsure of what any of this means, you can read more about it in our article on how to configure an IP address.
