Thanks for visiting! This week's Q&You're a fan of Star Trek - do you also own a set of Star Trek toys? Are you hoping they get made in 3D? Are there any toy characters or games that you really dig? Share below. By now many of you probably heard our review of the new Star Trek movie, which is not without its fair share of ups and downs. Inevitably, we had numerous calls and e-mails asking more details on what you didn't like about it. Here's what we'll share this week - if the idea of another Trek movie makes you queasy, please put down the keyboard and go watch something else. We've got lots of Star Trek reviews to catch you up.
Now, the bad stuff. First, yes, the big cast of stars is just as bad (and some more ridiculous than others) as in other recent Star Trek movies. But the problems start from the beginning. We'll be starting with the pre-production period where actors are auditioning for the part of Picard. And since that character has existed as an established character for all but the first two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, it's a bit of a shock to see his creator Jean-Luc Picard, now played by Captain Jean-Luc Louversin in the film, trying so hard to prove he is not the guy he always was. For a variety of reasons, we'll get into, it only further highlights Picard as the character, as opposed to the man.
The casting of DeForest Kelley was no surprise, having cast him as the Doctor's recurring companion, Spock. His performance as McCoy in that show is second to none. Kelley plays McCoy as the character, which is much better than playing McCoy as the actor who played the character in Dr. Dementia for a time. Kelley brings energy and charisma to McCoy and makes the character his own. We can't remember watching an episode in which Picard was the last character on Earth not to wear a shirt. As the captain of the Enterprise (a role in which Kelley never played), you might expect a uniform, but for most of the film McCoy says, Do I have to take a bath?
