-Albert Einstein. I have to admit something: I am anti-Norton person. I use it regularly and trust it to protect me from viruses and other malware, but every time it's on, my skin crawls.

I used to hate Symantec. I spent countless hours downloading and installing the latest version of Norton (they all look the same to me - but then, I also don't recognize the latest releases of Mac OS X). The Norton logo was a constant reminder that my computer had become a victim of the company's security software - a reminder that I'd done something stupid or unwise. But what if it wasn't a case of doing something stupid?

I realized that there was another possible explanation for my unease when a piece of malicious software started using the same techniques to trick me into installing its free copy of Norton. It's a very sophisticated technique: rather than trying to infect your system with malware directly, it creates a bogus web page which looks so convincing that you cannot resist clicking it and installing the legitimate Norton software. The result is that your antivirus software, which was already installed, is then overwritten with the free Norton license. To avoid confusion, in these cases the fake page will carry the name of a different antivirus software.

There was no way of knowing if my computer was infected. My first thought was that the fake page had been created by someone I knew and trusted - maybe a friend or relative who had recently tried to install Norton and had failed to get it working.

My second thought was that this was a new twist on the old joke of a man who calls his wife and says I have a problem with my Norton antivirus. If this was indeed the case, perhaps she had installed it and it had done nothing, making her paranoid. Then she asked her mother to check Norton and told her to make sure I was using it. Her mother, who knows how to download Norton legitimately, checked it and was delighted to find that I was indeed safe. She thought that I was testing her daughter's skills at computer security and that I would not have been fooled.

It could just have been a hoax.

Can I use Norton 360 for free?

I have an Android device.

You can download the free trial and test it. Also, make sure that you are installing the Android/iOS compatible version of the software. I have an Android tablet, and a few months ago I got a laptop for the sole purpose of using "Android". I downloaded and installed Norton Anti-Virus on my new laptop, which was very easy to do. It can easily be done on any Android device or computer.

Downloading it is straightforward: Download from Norton's website and install. After installation, you will be asked if you want to run the anti-virus application, which you probably do, unless you want to turn off virus protection (if so, click "Turn off"). There is one exception to this statement, and it is when you are installing it, or when installing a new driver for your device. Then you will be asked if you want to install Norton.

I have not had any problems with it, so far, and I have not had any viruses yet.99).

As others have stated, make sure you choose the correct version for your operating system. That is, Android/IOS, or PC.

Norton has a very nice mobile site. I like it because it gives you options. They offer free versions for iOS and Android, and if you are a premium user you get the Windows 8 Mobile edition.

After you do the downloads, you then go into the Norton Anti-Virus application, and click on "Online Scanner" to do the first scan. It will tell you if it found anything and how many files it found.

Norton recommends doing this for every 30 minutes, to prevent your device from being harmed. You also want to do scans after each time you connect to your wifi.e. So, if you connect once a day and want the mobile version, just do it that morning, once in the evening, etc. If you want the regular version, scan it every time you connect.

Another way to do the scans, is to use your computer's internet connection and do it through Google, Microsoft or any other website.

Is there a 100% free antivirus?

This is the most common question I get asked, and it's something I hate to answer.

There is no such thing, but there are ways to make your computer as safe as possible. You don't need to spend a thousand dollars or more to accomplish this. However, there are some free programs that will help and I've listed them here.

Antivirus (free). Antivirus is one of the few 100% free applications out there. It will scan your system for threats and remove viruses from your system. I recommend this program because it's very easy to use. The interface is self-explanatory and there are options to keep you in the loop with updates and the occasional malware warning. Antivirus will remove anything that tries to run on your system, but it can be easily turned off and I'm sure you could even create a keyboard shortcut to do so.

Malwarebytes (free). Malwarebytes is one of the most popular and trusted anti-malware tools in the world. It has an extremely robust firewall built into it that can protect your system from hackers and other types of attacks. Malwarebytes also scans and removes viruses and other malicious files from your system. Malwarebytes has a free version that you can use and it works really well.

SuperAntiSpyware (free). SuperAntiSpyware is similar to Malwarebytes in the fact that it scans for malicious software and removes it. It's more powerful than Malwarebytes though and can clean your system down to the inch. You can find these two applications in the same section of the software store. If you have one installed you can probably just uninstall the other and you're good to go.

Internet Security Scanner (free). Internet Security Scanner is another free application that scans your system for security and privacy issues. Internet Security Scanner is not a program that anyone needs to download or worry about; it simply scans your system and tells you what to do about it.

Avast! Free (free). Avast! Free is another free program you can download from the software store. It does what it says and is super simple.

How do I download Norton if I already have a product key?

To begin, please sign in to your Norton Account and select the Norton account you wish to use.

If you do not have a Norton Account, you can sign up for one by clicking on the Norton Account section below. Once you have signed in or created a Norton Account, you will need to enter your product key.

Please note: If you do not have a Norton Account, your product key is the only information needed for a download. However, if you already have a Norton Account, your product key will be required when you download.

If you still need to request your password, click on Change Password. Enter your email address and password, then click on Change Password. Confirm your new password.
