How do I turn on Google location sharing on Android?

So my friend's phone is missing.

I want to find her, but my friend doesn't want to send a tracking app.

Google Location sharing, or GLS for short, has been available on Android since Marshmallow and even on KitKat. Google provides a guide to help you activate GLS on an Android device. It includes the steps to be followed and some tips on how to get more accurate location data with your current location service.

Since we haven't heard the last of the missing phone so here's how to turn on GLS: Enable GLS in Google Location Settings. The steps below are intended for all Android users, regardless of your current device operating system. Turning on GLS will enable the following services: Fused location provider. Location History. Location access. Find My Device. Use WiFi when Location is turned off. Use location services when Location is turned off. I will guide you through the steps to turn on GLS on your Android device. To start off, you need to open Google Settings. On your phone screen, you will see a gear icon. Click the gear icon.

Scroll down to Location and choose either Fused Location Provider or Location History. Choose a setting for your choice of Fused Location Provider. (It's optional to enable these options).

Note: You can choose both options if you want both types of location services. For more details on enabling Location Services, you can refer to my post about enabling Google Maps and Here Maps on Android. Here's what I suggest you do if you are looking to improve location accuracy in your apps: Use WiFi-only mode. In order to have the best location experience, use WiFi instead of cellular data. Use WiFi only for Location to get the best results when using location apps on Android. Use the location services when you don't have an internet connection. ? Can you share your Google Maps location with someone?

Sure, it's no wonder that Google has a dedicated app for this.

And we have it too. But it also shows you are the owner and can give you the location information if you are logged in to your account. This might be handy when you want to share a ride with a friend, family member or anyone else.

It doesn't work all the time and may not work over data connection but when it does, it does great job of sharing the info so that only the people who are sharing the location knows the exact whereabouts. This is what I love about Google Maps. You get almost everything without actually buying any extra apps or downloading and installing any sort of program. That's the beauty of it and the whole purpose of being a web-based application. It just works. It is really quite awesome!
