How do I turn off content grabber in InDesign?

What does the shear tool do in InDesign?

The Shear tool is a wonderful design feature that will help you make your documents more professional, while reducing the size of your files.

Using it will allow you to turn your page elements such as headings, sidebars, and any other floating objects in your document into an editable snap which makes them very easy to re-size, align, and move around on the page.

The purpose of the tool is to cut or shear off an element and then use the Anchor points to drag it around as many times as needed on a page. You can also use your finger to drag the floating object around on the page. This is a good way to quickly change page elements around a page to match the needs of different sections.

To apply this effect, follow these steps: Open the desired page in Adobe InDesign. Create a headline style in your document (see the next page). Next, select all the text or objects in the desired section (eg, the left side column). Click the shear tool on your keyboard; this will activate the tool with a gray border. Once the tool is activated, click to place the highlighted edge anchor point in the top right corner of the selected objects. You can keep dragging over and over to re-size, relocate, and move the text or objects around as needed. When finished, press Esc on your keyboard to remove the tool from your selection. (Alternatively, click anywhere on the page.)

Note: The tools may vary on your computer, so you may need to go to the Edit Menu and choose View Options to display the menus. Using the dropdown box, choose Shear in the option menu. Once you are in Shear view, you may change the color by clicking on the color picker box. To remove the effect, do the same and set the Stroke Color to None.

NOTE: Some browsers like Google Chrome, will default to changing a text selection to black if you click on it with a black stroke color applied to it. To stop this from happening, select the "Shear" option from the "View Options."

Tip: The tool will be active (ie, you see the green border) when you are holding down the Alt key.

How do I grab a frame and image in InDesign?

I'm new to InDesign so forgive me if this has been asked before.

I want to grab a frame and image from the web and drop it in my InDesign document as a new layer. How do I do this? On the Mac, you need to hold down the Command key (usually labelled with the 3 lines on the Apple key) to toggle the library panel between being on the left or right side of your screen. After opening the library panel, search for and select the image you want. Drag the image to the location in your document where you want it to go (note the placement grid in the bottom left corner).

To copy and paste as you have asked, I would recommend the steps outlined above rather than any other options - they are much faster, less prone to error and produce good results. You can always edit them later.
