I am using a VPN to access BBC iPlayer on my PC.

Sometimes I can watch clips from any programme. Other times, when I have a fast connection and there are hundreds of things I want to watch, I'm unable to watch anything on BBC iPlayer. Why might this be? It's been happening for months but I've just noticed the problem again on BBC iPlayer. Is it the VPN or my connection? Do I need to install something on the laptop/desktop itself? I have a Macbook pro with OSX. If this means anything, I have recently used the Macbook as an Apple TV (not that it does much else!). Thanks for any help

The BBC has blocked access to some VPNs from BBC iPlayer. The BBC has struck a number of top VPN providers and is using the Digital Economy Act. The BBC is in violation of a U.S. Court order, and must provide this information to U. Consumers.

What is the Digital Economy Act? The Digital Economy Act (DEA) was passed by Congress in 2023, and is currently being debated on in the Senate. In short, the Digital Economy Act would give the Attorney General the authority to force companies to provide information about their customers. The DOJ has not specified the content of the information that will be required, or how the companies will be punished for noncompliance. In addition, the act does not set out what should happen if a company refuses to provide the information.

In late October of 2023, the DOJ issued a report on the legislation. You can read this report at: The DEA was also discussed in a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Oct. 23, 2023, where it was recommended to be sent to the full Senate for debate.

This act was meant to be a solution to the problem of companies sharing your data without your consent. The bill makes it illegal to gain access to or knowingly obtain, receive, or store electronic communications information from an electronic communications service or remote computing service.

Since the passing of the act, a number of VPN providers have stated that they are being hit with the digital economy act. The BBC has now taken issue with a number of VPNs that it states are blocked from BBC iPlayer.

What is blocking a VPN from BBC iPlayer? In most cases, the BBC is taking issue with the VPN service provider not having a physical address in the UK. The BBC is also stating that the VPN provider has received a notice from the DOJ to provide information about the customer.
