Why some Netflix movies aren't available?
I've been trying to watch 'Jupiter Ascending' for the past 2 days.
I put in my info correctly and still it is not available? Am I missing something? I have this problem with several of the films I'm trying to watch. I've tried to watch them again on different machines but nothing has worked. I even tried on an IPad
It's a real pain. I'm guessing your IP address is in the US, you have to manually select your region as this is only possible on the US site.
Why are some Netflix shows not available in US?
I would like to understand the reason why some Netflix shows are not available in USA, while other not.
For example, one of the shows, Stranger Things Season 1, is not available in the United States; however, it is available in many countries in Latin America. Are the networks that own the rights to the TV shows in the United States trying to avoid losing money by not distributing them to the US Netflix audience? Is there another reason for this? Edit: In this answer, I am only concerned with TV shows, and not movies. It is a different topic in the context of films.
Related questions: Why are some Netflix shows not available in Canada? Does Netflix have any policy about not putting certain TV shows and movies in the US? One of the reasons that American streaming services like Netflix do not have broadcast rights for movies or TV shows that they license from outside of North America (or at least the English speaking world) is that the rights to such content don't often expire during the life of an ongoing licensing agreement. It may seem counter-intuitive that someone else would want to keep their movies and TV shows from being re-run, but it has been proven over and over that people want to own the content they have purchased and be able to watch it as many times as they like. If a company licensed new content at the same time that they licensed broadcast rights for another country that was likely because their initial strategy involved licensing in that territory rather than just licensing the content. With broadcast rights in North America they have two options. They can either sell it or license it to them.
The problem with selling it to another network is that the company who licenses the rights gets full distribution rights for their content and keeps 100% of the revenue. On the other hand, licensing their content to another network means that they also give up all of the profits from that content that would have gone to the owners of the content and/or production studios who created the content. There are a number of networks and cable companies with which such arrangements are made.
But you're right that people are happy to pay more than half a decade's worth of income to own an entertainment property they purchased. That is a bargain most certainly in any business you can name.
Netflix's situation is a bit unusual.
