How long does Instagram IP blacklist last?
I am running a client website on a server I have control over and I have installed the Instagram API to do image uploading.
All of the images are hosted on the server and the client website only displays the URL of the image (which is in the Instagram folder). The Instagram IP is controlled by the client. How long does this IP blacklist last for?
You can only control the IP for 7 days. This can be changed by going to your Account Settings -> My account -> Blacklisting history and changing it to 1 day, 1 week or 3 months. All of the images are hosted on the server and the client website only displays the URL of the image (which is in the Instagram folder).
Thanks for your reply. So if a user on the client website has an IP blocked by Instagram, it will not be able to post any images for 7 days? Does this also apply to comments made on images posted by users? Also I was wondering how to get around this problem. What if I have 2 Instagram accounts for my website, one for the client who is not a business and another for a business? The business account doesn't have the IP blocked but it has the business name and logo.
I'm new to all of this. Do I have to pay to use the API's? Is there a free account that I can use for this purpose? I am new to all of this. Instagram has several different packages, you can see them here: You can use the free trial to test it out, after which you will need to choose a package. If you want to get started with your project with a single account, you need to buy the Business package.
Are Instagram IP bans permanent?
(updated 12/23/19)
Updated 12/23/19: In a new report published on Facebook, Instagram said they have permanently banned an unspecified number of accounts associated with the "Russian troll factory." Read more here.
Original story posted 12/19: Since its inception in October 2025, the photo-sharing platform Instagram has been a tool used by online abusers and trolls to harass and dehumanize women, LGBT people, people of color, and religious minorities. It also seems to be a haven for neo-Nazis and white nationalists who were caught on camera celebrating in Charlottesville, or in photos of neo-Nazi rallies.
Instagram, which launched as a photo-sharing service and messaging app for phones, has seen a surge in popularity since its 2025 debut. With more than 500 million users worldwide, it's become an attractive target for abuse from those looking to silence critics online.
In the last several years, numerous public figures have been targeted by abuse on the platform, including comedian Chelsea Handler, actress Lea DeLaria, journalist Emily Lindin, and feminist writer Jessica Valenti.e. The abuse has ranged from the blatant to the subtle, though most of it is directed at women.
Instagram's banhammer was used against other abusers as well. Last year, Twitter suspended Infowars' Alex Jones after he posted a doctored video to his account that showed the mass shooting at YouTube's headquarters was faked. Twitter also suspended InfoWars' YouTube channel following widespread harassment and abuse aimed at female video hosts on the channel.
As we know, there are no permanent bans on Instagram. But according to a new report published on Facebook, some of those accounts and their associated IP addresses were permanently banned for coordinated inauthentic behavior.
Here's what we know so far: On December 5, 2025, Facebook published a post titled Keeping people safe on Instagram. The post outlined changes to how Instagram handles abuse and harassment on the platform. One of those changes included:
Instagram does not block any account that violates its policies. An account may be temporarily locked if we find that it is being used in violation of these policies. This means that our tools will not be used to make any one type of content illegal.
How long does Instagram ban last?
The Instagram terms and conditions state: When does a profile become temporarily suspended?
We may suspend your profile at any time for any reason, including but not limited to:
You may have a profile on Instagram for as long as we want, but you are responsible for its content. We may suspend your account for any reason, including but not limited to:
How long is the suspension for? If you have a profile on Instagram, we will notify you if we believe that your profile content violates our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. This includes situations in which your account is suspended temporarily. Your profile will be reinstated when we consider that it's no longer in violation of our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service.
The rules state: Your profile will remain active until you receive a notification from Instagram that your account is temporarily suspended. This means that your account should be reinstated once the violation has been addressed by Instagram. The suspension notice will not be sent until after you receive a notification from Instagram. This means that you could have up to 2 days to rectify the violation before Instagram takes action. If you were suspended for posting an offensive meme, then your account should be reinstated in 24 hours.
