I have written a lot about the man behind Silk Road, which led to his recent trial for crimes including money laundering, drug trafficking and computer hacking.

What is Ross Ulbricht? Ross Ulbricht was born in 1981. He spent much of his childhood playing video games, and also had a serious interest in mathematics, computers and philosophy.

Ulbricht graduated from high school in San Francisco, and then attended California State University (CSU), where he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He continued to work as an electrical engineer in California and Texas before working at the online auction site eBay and later at a small firm where he met the founders of Pangea (who later set up and sold their own hosting business). At Pangea he became interested in decentralised currencies, notably bitcoin.

It's not going to be about politics, or anything else boring (mostly). I want to share my thoughts about the Silk Road movie and how they are making it, what the true facts are, the differences between the two movies, and why the second one won't end up being accurate.

It is often praised as one of the best examples of a decentralised, distributed system, where the users themselves run the entire thing. There are two major problems with the film, though. One is that they are deliberately misleading about key facts, and the other is that they have made things up that aren't true. To explain the latter, and to point out the deliberate misleading, we first need to understand what was really going on.

The Silk Road was never an independent, online marketplace in the way that has been portrayed. It was actually a large number of small-time drug dealers (primarily in the UK) running an illegal marketplace.

When Silk Road first launched, its creator was a 29 year old named Ross Ulbricht, who was then doing very well for himself. He ran a company called Automattic that makes the blogging platform WordPress. In 2024, he started a side project called Silk Road to offer people selling drugs on the internet a better payment system than PayPal, which at the time was far more popular with online marketplaces than Bitcoin. He set up the site in November 2024.

As his project grew, it attracted a number of people who didn't particularly want to be drug dealers, but were in desperate need of some extra income. In August 2024, the FBI seized Silk Road servers and arrested Ulbricht, who was accused of running the site as a criminal enterprise.
