How can I get my freedom?
It's my first day in a new prison and I'm worried.
What if I end up in the wrong prison? I'll get sent to a higher security prison! What if I'm in a prison that's too crowded? My safety is at risk! What if I end up on the wrong tier? How will I avoid being attacked by the other prisoners? What if I'm in a prison with a group of hardened criminals? How can I get along with them? What if I end up in a prison with violent criminals? What if I end up in a prison with sexual predators? The problem is, if I'm going to be free, I need to be able to live in peace and harmony. I can't solve every potential problem as it arises. But I can control and manage my own environment so I won't be exposed to situations that will undermine my freedom.
So I can live my life in freedom. But what if I'm not free to choose where I live? If my family owns property that they are willing to sell me, then I have the option of moving. But what if I don't want to live on my parents' property, or their property isn't as big as I like, or the property is out of my price range? Or maybe I can't move to a new location, because I'm legally a child, an illegal immigrant, or because of a criminal conviction that prevents me from residing in any location. How can I get out of this mess? My options are limited. In most states, I can only choose a prison that's not too far from my home. I can't make my own choices.
But I can plan my freedom. I can plan how I want my life to unfold.
I don't have to react to every situation as it comes. Instead, I can consider the future consequences of each event and plan my future accordingly.
When a car runs into me on the freeway, I don't panic. Instead, I can ask myself how this event will impact my future.
What is the true meaning of freedom?
The U.
S. Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history; by war's end, more than 600,000 Americans had died as a result of a war over the institution of slavery. In The Meaning of Freedom, author and historian Michael Kazin reminds us that the Civil War was not only a great moral battle between individual freedoms and slavery, but a battle about individual rights.
One of our most powerful documents of individual rights is found in the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson. As the U. Civil War ended, a small band of men met at the Philadelphia Conference on May 4, 1864 to rewrite our founding documents. John F. Marszalek, director of the National Archives and Records Administration, writes in A Different Kind of Truth:
As I sat in the audience at the time, I can remember looking at Abraham Lincoln's face at the conference, seeing a slight tightening at the corners of his eyes. Then he stood up and said: We must be unanimous. We must have one voice. If anyone objects, he is disqualified. The majority of each side is right. Go ahead, gentlemen. Write it down.
These gentlemen did not object and they did not write the words that became the First Amendment (but a few years later they would write the Second). The Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights are a very long way from what Jefferson wanted - freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of the press; even today, the right to equal protection under the law means that all men and women are to be judged and treated equally by the law regardless of whether they are white, black, wealthy, poor, male, female, old, young or different from others. In The Meaning of Freedom, Kazin, one of America's greatest historians, offers two interpretations of the meaning of freedom:
One interpretation is simply that all men and women should be free to develop their unique talents. We might understand freedom as what I like to call a muse or a call for what is best in each of us. Such freedom, argues Kazin, has never been absolute in any society and has varied widely depending on our age and era.
What are the 3 kinds of freedom?
There are three kinds of freedom that you are trying to achieve in your life.
Freedom from fear. Freedom from worry. Freedom from stress. Each of those is a different kind of freedom that you're trying to achieve. As you work with the various tools for freedom, it is helpful to know what each kind of freedom is and why you're working toward it. In this course you will receive an introduction to each of the 3 kinds of freedom as well as tips and tools for living in that way of freedom.
Freedom from worry. Why do I worry? What is it? The reason we have these mental pictures in our mind that are called thoughts is because they bring us closer to things that are important or scary. Those mental pictures can be really helpful, but if we let them get away from us, they can distract us from what we're trying to achieve.
A thought is an opinion that you are forming about the world. You think that this is what's going on, or you feel this is what's going on. It's really just an opinion. Thoughts are the easiest things to change in your life, so don't get attached to your thoughts.
We have to let go of the thoughts. When you're free from worry, you have free time that you're not constantly thinking about.
Free time is one thing I like to think about. Let's say that I'm worried about something and I'm constantly thinking about it, and then I give myself 10 minutes or 20 minutes of free time where I'm not thinking about it. And if I do this several times throughout the day, it frees me from the thought.
So how would I start letting go of my thoughts? If I were worried about something and I'm thinking about it, I can stop. I take my free time and I'm not thinking about it anymore. I'd do that for 10 to 20 minutes, and then I'd start the process over again.
Worrying has to do with the way that we've been trained from birth. The old expression is "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." This is how it was before we had the internet and social media. People had friends around who they talked to about what was going on. People didn't worry all the time.
