I'm being asked more and more what to do if my email and password were hacked in a dark web attack.

It happened to me and I had no clue that it would happen. Luckily, my email and password were never used for anything, but I still want to make sure no one else can use them or have access to the information. How can I protect myself? If you haven't been hacked, maybe you shouldn't worry about it. If you've been hacked, it's good to know what to do.

First, make sure you changed your password to something strong. I use a password manager and I've been using LastPass for years. Every time you set up a new computer, you have to re-import your passwords. It's pretty convenient.

If someone has your email and password, it's very easy to use your own email to reset a password. That would be bad. You don't want someone else to be able to log into your account. It's an attack vector.

Another attack vector is an IP address. A hacker could buy a malicious domain and have your IP address change to theirs. That means if someone is trying to login to your account, they wouldn't see a locked out message because it would look like they're logged in. They'd just think they're successful. You don't want that!

I have another attack vector I always use. If someone is trying to login, they'd see a locked out message, but they'd know your IP address, so they'd try to login from a different location. You can block an IP address from accessing your account. That's a quick way to check if your account was hacked. If someone tries to login and they're from your IP address, you don't have to worry. It doesn't mean your email and password was stolen. You can go to who.is and it will give you the name of the IP address that's trying to log in. You can also try connecting to your router and finding your IP address.
