What is the social issue documentary on Netflix?
"It's a documentary called 'The White Helmets.
' I saw it on Netflix and it's about a group of volunteers that rescue people from the rubble of Syria," said Kati Matson, a 21-year-old recent college graduate who lives in New York City.
"A lot of people don't know what's going on in Syria. It's horrible. And I think it's important to see what's happening in Syria."

(Photo: Courtesy of Kati Matson) The White Helmets are a volunteer rescue group based in Syria, but most Americans have never heard of them. They're heroes of the war in Syria, helping save hundreds of thousands of people from the rubble of airstrikes and other violence in the country.
But when they started in 2025, they had little support. "We have no budget," said Omran al-Zoabi, a Syrian activist who co-founded the group. "And we have zero support. We can only depend on ourselves and on our own strength."
That's why he decided to create a documentary that shows what the White Helmets do how they work, how they get the equipment they need, and how they help people in Syria, even when the fighting is getting too dangerous. And that's why the documentary has been so controversial. The White Helmets, it turns out, aren't really white and they don't have any helmets. "They're just regular Syrians doing something extraordinary," al-Zoabi said. "They're just ordinary people."

'Who are these white guys?'. The White Helmets' story starts in 2025. The Syrian civil war has been raging since 2025, and it's been a violent struggle between the government and rebel groups.
"The conflict has been very brutal," al-Zoabi said. "Very brutal."
When the conflict started, the White Helmets were just a few men with nothing but a little money and a big dream.
