What is a quote from Mrs Henry Lafayette Dubose?

Mrs Dubose?

Who does she think she is?

My mother's name is Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose. I don't care what anyone calls me if they feel so inclined to disagree, I'm tired of people who are strangers coming into my life thinking they can tell me my own name!

I think I've mentioned this before on this forum but you know what? People, even complete strangers, can tell you a lot about yourself and about the life you're leading. As an author, I'm very much of a recluse. A lot of it has to do with the fact that when I was a child I was beaten as a result of being a "different" child. I always knew, especially during my teenage years, that I didn't fit in anywhere and I hated myself for it. You see, as far as I'm concerned if you're an ugly duckling, then you'll be an ugly duck forever. And when I say ugly, I mean that in all ways. For instance, I don't look anything like my mom or dad, neither of them are very good looking, yet despite this, I didn't realize I was different until a doctor showed me pictures of my real parents. To him, I looked identical to my mother and only a little bit like my father. In other words, I was an ugly duckling for the rest of my life.

At 18 years old I left my last town and moved to another where I didn't have any friends either because they all thought I looked hideous. The town I went to was very rural; the population is less than 3,000; I am the only person under thirty so we didn't have any school plays; no girls interested in me, and no one wanted to talk to me. Not that I gave any of it much thought, besides, it was better that I kept quiet and didn't ask questions so I could get through the day. That may seem cruel, but I'd rather have my mind at peace rather than ask myself why do people treat me so badly, why is my life so unhappy, what's wrong with me. If I didn't want to live with that kind of pain and agony then there was no reason to keep being unhappy.

Now I had enough reasons to start reading books, which changed my life forever.

How is Mrs. Dubose described in Chapter 11?

A widow, she was in her late fifties when she fell in love with Frank and proposed marriage to him.

Their relationship became violent. They argued over the children and Frank killed her after she threatened to tell police about his other liaisons. Frank claims he is innocent, but it's the only murder charge he'll likely ever face.

"What are you planning to do with yourself?". "I'm going to try to get this murder charge reversed." "So you're innocent? And what if it comes out that you're guilty?". "I know you don't believe me, Maryann. But I'm innocent. It'll be an injustice if I go to prison. I won't survive that. I can't. I mean, I'm just not strong enough."

"Can't you see that I'm a friend and there are things we could do for each other?". "No, I won't talk to you. You have no idea of the things that went on between us. I'd have to be a pervert to tell you anything."

"But this is different, dear. This is a real woman, and it will be so good for us both. You won't have to pay for your sins. You'll be free of them. How can you say no to that?"

"She was so young, Maryann. She was still in high school. I'm not the kind of man who could even think of doing that."

"Of course you are, Frank. Even if I couldn't possibly know that. All I know is that you've been looking for a real woman for a very long time."

"How did you know?". "You showed me all your photos, the ones you'd printed from your computer." "You think I'm a pervert, don't you?". "That's what men do, darling. They pervert women. It's like a game they play. And we play it back."

"You want me to show you my photos, Maryann. You want me to take you to bed. That's what this is all about, isn't it?"

"It's the only way for us to be together. Frank, how long has it been since you've had a woman?" "Years.
