How rare is red Camellia?

This is a rare variety of Camellia, found at the edge of a forest.

It was collected in 1999. It is not known from where it was taken.

I found this plant in 1999 at the edge of a Japanese forest near Sasebo City, Chiba Prefecture. While I was looking for wild plants in the area, I found this single piece. I took some more specimens in 2025, and they are kept as seeds. So far, I have only grown three varieties of this species, but one has been given its scientific name as Nippon Camellia japonica. The other two are yet to be named.

What is the meaning of the color Camellia?

Camellia means: In a beautiful and elegant sense, a rich and noble lady.

The origin of this flower is India and China. Camellia flowers are widely cultivated, they come in many colors.

The name of camellia is derived from the word 'Kam' meaning 'dark-red' and 'Lla', meaning 'flower'. These flowers are dark-red and they have a great number of bright spots, which make them appear very attractive and beautiful. They are very useful to decorate parties, weddings and other festive occasions. In Europe they are used in traditional gardens as a border plant, but are also available in many varieties.

When was the camellia flower introduced to Europe? This beautiful flower was first introduced to Europe at the end of the 17th century by the botanist Jean-Baptiste Carandelle (1740-1809). The flower has been used in gardens and in the horticultural trade for over 300 years. But its use in China is much older, dating back to 7th century.

Where do the camellia flowers grow? The flowers grow at heights between 1 to 5 m. It is easy to cultivate them as long as the climate is not too dry or too wet. The ideal place for them is sunny slopes, especially when protected against wind.

What do you think about the shape of the camellia flowers? They are a large and round form with a long narrow tube on the top. This tube has a number of small petals, the color of which is different from the color of the rest of the flower. The leaves of this species are green, opposite and the shape of the leaves varies according to the age of the plant. The fruit, which is an achene, is about 6 mm long, red and contains a large number of seeds.

How many colors can we find in the camellia flower? There are some 80 different colors. The most important ones are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, white, pink, violet and brown.

What does the red Camellia tattoo mean?

This is a very difficult one, so here's my attempt.

Please don't let it get in the way of a better answer.

I've searched a great deal and come up empty. The symbolism of red was much older than the 19th Century in China (although possibly borrowed from Japan), but at the time (the 1860's) China still practiced the Confucian system of government with the eldest and most distinguished son inheriting his father's position as heir-apparent to the emperor.

There's a legend about a man who was exiled from his family. The "Red Camellia" story tells that the man's two sons, each hoping for a change in the elder brother's status, made a trip into the country and learned that the eldest brother was on his deathbed. The elder had planned to kill the younger son if he were not the chosen one to succeed him. The younger saw the chance and arranged with the eldest to have the dying father do him in so that the eldest brother would inherit the position instead.

He told his brothers of his plan. They both agreed.

On the evening of the elder brother's deathbed, he took his two sons out on his horse and said "Take a good look at your brother as I lay dying". He then shot and killed the youngest son.

The eldest brother lived happily for years and became a great general and leader. In this story, the story is that this eldest brother was a great character in the eyes of the people because he was the only one who could not be killed for being evil.

It's possible that what you have is some kind of family insignia or family crest that means a great deal to your family. Or it might just be a decorative tattoo that is in your husband's family and does not have any meaning.

So, it's tough but I'd say the closest I can come to your question is that it's likely symbolic of the elder brother's betrayal of the other brother, a common theme in Asian literature and legends. And maybe something about loyalty?
