We have been working on this article for three years and it finally came time to put this section in, but I wanted to make sure I had the right info on the best time to plant.

There are so many different plants to choose from, that it can be hard to know when to plant and what would best. One thing you will find is that most plants like to have a bit of space to mature so you want to plant in areas that are well drained. Also there needs to be enough water for growth and that area needs to be protected from extreme hot or cold temperatures. We didn't have room for a greenhouse or a cold frame here in the backyard so we opted for the pots.

For our first attempt we chose Camellias as they are a hardy and easy to grow. We chose one plant per pot that we planted all at once with a little help from our daughter.

We used some soil in the pots that came from our tree planter and filled them up with potting soil. The plan was to get it in the ground in mid spring. It was an early spring here, so we ended up putting the pots in the garden on April 23rd.

They were put on the ground and then covered with plastic on top of the soil and then we did the traditional water on the bottom and top approach. We watered about every other day. In the beginning it was so humid we just misted the leaves. The pots are about 18 wide and 30 tall and we ended up planting 16 plants in each pot.

The only problems that we had during the winter were those pesky leaf miners. The ones that live in the ground are bad enough, but once we got the plants in the pots, the leaf miners showed up to have a party and started eating the leaves. So far we haven't had any more leaf miners since we moved them to the pots.

So, the Camellias are doing great. Now, it is time to do a little test to see how they are doing and if they are ready to be planted out.
