Which is better Norton 360 Deluxe or Premium?
This is a discussion on ?
Within the Tech Board forums, part of the Community Boards category; If you are using Windows XP and you want a good security program for Windows, then Norton 360 is recommended. I have a question:. I like the fact that you can protect against the following vulnerabilities in McAfee:
I use McAfee for my home stuff (my wife has the paid version) and it does an ok job for her purposes. I have a separate laptop with windows and it does a good job with virus scanning as well as keeping up to date with a few other things like firewall protection, etc. So as long as your not into heavy usage, McAfee is one of the best for the money and has a lot of features.
"There are two types of software. Those that cost less than your life savings and those that will cost your life savings."
Yes, it does, my friend, and you do not need ANY of the extra features - I was going to mention AVG but, while it does some of the same things as McAfee and Norton does, there are many important aspects to McAfee that it simply is not as good as. It's not a terrible product either, just not great.
However, I will never install it on my home PC for that reason. I run two PC's, and the free version of AVG does a good job on my XP laptop - it is an older machine that my parents upgraded - but doesn't offer the options that most PCs come with.
But I agree with you as far as I need protection, and if you want to get really good, I suggest you go with both.that means 2x the protection.
AOL and other subscription services are a waste of money IMO - the whole point of being an Internet user should be not being at the mercy of "someone else". You are responsible for protecting yourself and your data from outside access to your computer.
It seems pretty clear-cut. My personal preference is to stay away from AOL, so I opted for McAfee.

Is Norton 360 good or bad?
I've been reading about Norton 360 lately, and I've heard quite a bit of ruckus about it.
Here's my perspective on the program. First, what is Norton 360?
Norton 360 is a free software upgrade for Norton Internet Security Suite 2024. I say it's free, because the free version costs you only after the purchase of a paid version of Norton Internet Security Suite 2024. So let's go over what the new software brings to the table.
First, you can have your email and instant messaging conversations encrypted. There are two types of encryption -- 128 bit (which is what you see when you use https) and 256 bit (as in the above image). While 128-bit encryption would keep a virus from stealing your information, it wouldn't stop a government entity from doing so. Plus, if they have a court order, they could get all the information they want. You would need 256-bit encryption to thwart a government entity or court order.
But wait, what about my privacy? Don't they threaten it by giving away all this information? They don't know what programs you're running, where you access the internet from, and other such information. All they see is the information stored in your computer's memory. In short, they know what programs you are running, but that's all. For instance, let's say you use Internet Explorer. They know that you're using IE, but they know nothing more.
They may use these information to identify if you're running a pirated version of Windows. If they do, Norton will notify you that it's not legal to use pirated software.
So let's say you're using IE and it opens up a malicious link in an email. Your browser sends all of the information pertaining to that link. But no matter where that link comes from, they'll just see the text of the link (or text in html format) and know it's malicious. It's similar to the way a search engine knows that it's a bad website if it has malware and viruses attached to it.
When you run antivirus software like Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee, Zone Alarm, or Norton, they analyze your computer and see if it contains any suspicious programs that are either downloading something harmful, or downloading a virus. That's the only time they check.
Is there anything better than Norton 360?
Norton 360 is the best antivirus software out there in my opinion.
Norton has a great reputation for being able to find viruses and malware and for having a good virus database. The software is fairly easy to use and is simple to configure. Unfortunately, with its free plan, you are limited to scanning only your current directory and two email folders. This may be fine for some, but if you like to have a thorough check of your system, it will take some time.
You may have heard of another company called AVG that also has antivirus software, and while it does a fair job of keeping your system safe, I haven't had good luck with it. I'm not saying that you can't use AVG, because I've had no issues at all with it, but I just haven't had good luck with their online support. I would love to know if anyone else has had similar experiences.
I think it's safe to say that Norton 360 is one of the better options for a free antivirus program. I have been using Norton 360 for a few years now and I am happy with it. I would recommend that you keep it set up at all times. I like to run it every couple of months just to ensure everything is still running smoothly.
The following is a list of things that I feel are nice features of Norton 360: Good virus database. Great search and replace feature. Good history log of infections. Search for files and processes by name. Notification system, so you get notified whenever there is activity on your system. Configurable security alerts. The Norton 360 software works just fine for the average user. There are just a couple of things that I don't like about it.
When you are getting a notification, there is a pop-up window. This seems to be an OSX thing and doesn't seem to affect everyone. If you happen to use the notification icon on the desktop, you won't see any pop-ups.
Norton 360 scans files by default. Unless you tell it to check email or whatever, it will scan your whole computer for any viruses. When you get the notifications, there is a file that will be downloaded to your desktop and there will be a window that will open. The window will scan all of your files for any viruses.
