Has Hulu blocked VPN?
New tool may be able to unblock Hulu from Canada and the US
Hulu has taken great pains to try and control the use of VPNs which have been a common method of getting around geo-filtering.
In recent years, VPNs have become more prominent in efforts to break geo-filtering but some users are finding Hulu continues to block access from VPNs such as Tunnelbear for iOS. A few steps that can help users unblock certain content on Hulu from Canadian and American viewers, such as using different DNS records to bypass geographic restrictions.
If you try and stream content on Hulu from Canada and America you find it is still blocked by the service. The reason given for blocking users is that they want to protect their business interests from being undermined by pirate websites offering stolen content.
Hulu's position makes sense to us, and if there are no plans to offer a Canadian version of the service then there's nothing else for them to gain from blocking the content, but some Canadians will argue that a subscription service shouldn't be locked behind restrictive controls and that VPNs shouldn't be blocked. After all, these VPNs are designed to work around these geo-blocks and make a better viewing experience with less latency and issues when accessing Hulu.
These days VPNs are seen as a handy way for Canadians to view streaming services like HBO Go. They let users access content that's geo-restricted and usually offer a much better streaming experience, at least until the VPN client gets blocked by Hulu. The other problem is that if the service's server detects that the user is being routed through a VPN the connection is broken and the TV provider won't be paid and the user isn't able to bypass geo-filtering for that program.
So far VPNs haven't been banned from using Hulu but there are reports in some users of the new Tunnelbear iOS app which is a free VPN service that helps to bypass a number of geo-blocks. The VPN service is available in an Android app too but it's not free and currently has ads on it. However, TunnelBear offers free service to Windows and Mac users which is ideal.
Why is Hulu not working with NordVPN?
Hulu is currently blocked in Russia, according to a new report from VPN service NordVPN.
In a Twitter post on Saturday, the company claimed that it had become aware of a "blocking issue" affecting Hulu access in Russia. There are also other countries in which access is reportedly limited to a select number of TV channels, while users are unable to watch online content.
NordVPN said its own test of Hulu showed there was "some sort of blocking going on". The company also said this could because Hulu is not yet certified for access in Russia, but offered no further clarification. An official response from Hulu's customer service was not forthcoming at the time of writing.
Hulu and Hulu Plus offers a vast range of programs including current and past TV and film series from numerous networks, as well as feature length movies and even short-form content. Since its launch in 2024, Hulu has been integrated into many popular TV services across the globe, and it remains the most widely watched television streaming service in the United States.
Users have previously encountered issues with Hulu access in the UK, after complaints about the "limited content available" and a lack of access to Live TV stations were raised by users of Roku's TV devices. Roku's UK support channel told users to "contact Hulu directly" for help. The BBC has more recently launched a channel which provides content from all of the major US streaming services, but in other parts of the world the options for accessing Hulu are limited.
Russia blocked in 2024. In 2024, an executive at state telecoms firm Rostelecom said that Russia intended to block all unapproved content services unless they reached licensing agreements with the government. At the time, the minister in charge of the National Federation, Evgeny Buzhinsky, told Russian media that the move was necessary due to concerns that unlicensed content services could cause damage to the country's national security.
"The Internet is becoming an information resource, and it must be under a government monopoly. All the necessary measures have been taken, we've got the licenses already," Buzhinsky told state news outlet RT. "All the rest will be blocked, all the apps, all the search engines, all the sites."
In the same month, the country's communications regulator Roskomnadzor also said that the government had banned access to foreign Internet services over fears that the sites were distributing content that violates copyright laws.
