Why does NordVPN not work with Hulu?

And why did this become such a complicated topic?

I feel like I'm repeating myself in some ways, but the answers to these questions really changed the way I think about the VPN. Before this article was written, and especially after reading NordVPN's FAQ (which isn't as helpful as I thought it would be, despite its length) I still considered Hulu support to be a non-issue. I was wrong.

I tried NordVPN again just to see if they were just being an ass, and it was the same thing as before. They won't say this service is incompatible with your VPN, but they imply that Hulu doesn't work by being silent about it. This made me really angry, especially when I learned that my VPN could be broken even at a low level.

This whole experience really got to me. It reminds me of the old days of piracy. If you broke something, you couldn't really know whether or not it was your fault, because other people did things that you didn't know how to do, and it could have been a completely different software or hardware issue. Maybe you didn't even try the same thing, because if you tried to do the same thing again, it might have worked.

Now, it's the same thing. I asked Hulu support. They didn't answer. I asked NordVPN support. And yet, it works for other users. If the VPN is working for someone else, then it can't be the VPN's fault. If the VPN works for someone else, then it must have been a random quirk on my computer. Maybe this computer does this on purpose, and every computer that works with Hulu does this on purpose. Perhaps this is what NordVPN wanted to protect me from by using that ridiculous and vague answer, which is not answer at all.

These are some of the thoughts in my mind when NordVPN's customer service told me to contact Hulu directly. The idea that someone would make these kinds of statements to me, or anyone else, makes me think of the old times of piracy, when people who felt helpless would blame others for their problems.

Does Hulu work with NordVPN?

Hulu (Hulu.com and Hulu Plus) works very well with NordVPN. The Hulu Plus addon is compatible with any VPN subscription, and even allows access from a non-Windows OS (Android, iOS, OSX, Linux, etc). You can also access Hulu using the Kodi Media Center (as long as the Kodi is in Access Point mode).

Hulu has many live TV shows, current episodes, on demand movies, past episodes, etc. If you have never tried the service, you should really give it a try.

Hulu is compatible with many VPN providers, but is incompatible with ExpressVPN due to their no logging policy. There are ways to work around this (see this Reddit post), but the best option for Hulu viewers is to use a VPN provider that isn't logging all your traffic. How to Use a VPN on Hulu. Why is Hulu no longer working with VPN?

Hulu has taken over a portion of their website that is not accessible to users who use any other form of VPN. It's an issue that many people are having, but one that hasn't been resolved by any means as yet.

In an attempt to help solve this, we've had some great feedback on our Facebook page. Some suggest using TOR, which works brilliantly. Some suggest using open-VPN (such as NordVPN). Some suggest using IKEv2 (which is not very simple). There are a lot of suggestions out there, and none of them are any good.

The situation. I'm in a good position to know the issues better than most. I ran a VPN for years and made friends with tech support at the end of their shift. If I ever run into a problem, I get a good idea of what's actually going on. I have experience getting these problems solved - it usually boils down to one of two things - an issue with my router or the DNS settings on the client.

The first problem is easy - if you're accessing Hulu using the open-VPN solution, you need to either change your router settings or get a DNS-over-TLS/IPSec/OpenVPN (TOR) router. For most people, this is easy - just Google "Tor router" and you'll be sorted.

The second problem is where the real challenge lies. If you have a VPN that uses OpenVPN - then your client should already have a set of DNS servers configured, it will likely be something like. Server 10.8.1
Server 10.2 This is fine. Unfortunately, if you've changed your client's DNS server to the DNS servers that Hulu provide, you won't get any luck - you'll need to change your client to use the OpenVPN DNS servers that Hulu provides. You can do this by changing your options on the client before connecting to Hulu. Once you connect, look at the list of options, and click "Options."

There, you'll find a list of options. In the VPN settings, click "Advanced" and scroll down until you find the line that says "DNS1." Just below this, you'll find a list of DNS servers, and you'll probably see something like

Server 8.
