What is a senior staff software engineer?

A job role that does not sound impressive on paper.

I'm sure many people have no idea what the role entails and many probably do not realise just how awesome it really is to be considered for a senior staff software engineer role.

What it involves. The first question is '?' This question has three parts: what do they do, how do they spend their day and who they work with. These three components form the core of a senior staff software engineer job role, as well as the title of this job role! If you have this role, then you would typically work one or two software projects of any size within your organisation (although it is not always this structured). You are responsible for designing and implementing solutions that are built to solve the most pressing problems for the organisation. You will also work with many different people and work cross function teams - so you will also need excellent communication skills. The role also requires a high level of technical ability.

This role demands an enormous amount of both physical and mental energy. Most junior staff are constantly tired at the end of the day, but this role expects you to rise early, stay up late and have a long commute every day. Despite the fact that this is your most important role, you are not valued much outside of it and even less in larger organisations.

So, what does a Senior Staff Software Engineer do? To truly understand the concept of Senior Staff Software Engineer job role, it is vital to consider what makes a 'senior' engineering role different from a 'junior' engineering role. A senior engineer is always more senior than a junior engineer. This doesn't mean that he/she has been out of the industry for ages, it just means that a senior engineer has achieved a certain skill set or set of job roles that they possess. This set of job roles gives them the ability to move from a junior role to a senior role, or to take on a senior position across different companies.

It may seem like a bit of an abstract concept but let's look at some examples. Consider the following example: The manager has a software team with two engineers: Engineer 1 & Engineer 2.

What is the highest salary for a senior software engineer?

I have a friend who has the job title "Senior Software Engineer" on his LinkedIn profile, but he has only one single line of experience.

The question: is there a range of income where "Senior Software Engineers" are paid? Is there a standard salary that I should expect for this level of experience? Is the company that employs him paying over what the market would bear? Should I ask him to provide evidence of this? I am trying to get an idea of what the salary expectations are, and I think I am at a disadvantage as a person with only 1 line of experience. You might look at this Google employee page, if that means anything: You might consider asking if they are willing to post the salary they got for that position. David RicherbyAug 5 '16 at 18:20. 2

@DavidRicherby - I don't know why you posted this link, since I do not think it does what you are after. The links that you posted are for people who apply for the Google job, and it's possible that the pay ranges there are higher than what an experienced software engineer in a high-paying market would make.

I would ask about the specific position he holds, rather than a generic job title. I've hired "senior" developers and made that title mean something. I've also hired "junior" developers and made that title mean nothing. They're doing the same job but with different skill levels and responsibilities.

I guess what I'm saying is that when you look for a "senior software engineer" position, maybe you will encounter someone who can barely program, and someone who might even be less skilled than you. The only reason you might want to trust an online source for salary information is if you had no other way to make that determination. BaconAug 5 '16 at 20:44

First of all, "senior" has different meanings in different companies, in different jobs. It can mean seniority, it can mean "we expect you to work 80 hour weeks".
