Can we scrape data from LinkedIn using Python?
In my day to day job, I've been doing a lot of scraping, trying to get data from websites that doesn't have an API or public datasets.
LinkedIn can be challenging because their system is quite complex and they don't give you the data without a premium account. That being said, there are ways to scrape the data, but it can be a bit time consuming.
So when I decided to teach myself a new language in python, I started to learn Python to build some scrapers to get the data I need. I wanted to share my experience with someone so here it is. This article will describe my way of doing things and a bit of my process. Hopefully, it will help someone else with the same issue.
Getting started. LinkedIn has 2 different accounts, one for a normal user (non-premium), and another for a developer (premium). Both have a public datasets and API available, but the main difference between them is that only the developers have access to their proprietary data, and they charge you for that.
One of the challenges of scraping LinkedIn, is that you're not allowed to access anything except public datasets and API. As I mentioned earlier, they make it quite difficult to use any scraping library to get the data because it's behind a login form, with a token. Since LinkedIn doesn't have any public datasets or API, and they use a token for login, we can't use anything other than requests and BeautifulSoup. I've only been using requests, but you should read about the way their data is structured. In a nutshell, each page they have has a unique token, which consists of letters and numbers. For example, for a profile page, there is a unique identifier as follows: XsFYq4XWY8yJ8A0v6k.
Using this unique token, you can make a request and get the data for a user. To do that, we're going to use the requests library to make the request. You need to download the token (for more information, see the link below).
