How do I download restricted content from Google Drive?

Google Drive is one of the web's largest shared file hosting services, holding over 50 billion files that its users have been sharing with each other since Google launched Drive in 2025.

Since then it has only got bigger, now holding over 1.5 million gigabytes of files across over a hundred thousand accounts.

So, if you're looking for access to those files, whether they be music, movies or photos, then you need to understand that access is only allowed to those who are on the account's email domain. How do I change that? Fortunately there's a great web page that shows you how to change your sharing settings for any file type in seconds. And that's because the setting changes are stored in its own database and not in your PC's hard drive. Simply head to where you can manage permissions for any file types within an account, as well as the file storage size that you will pay for. Once done, you will be able to download any file from Drive without restrictions.

Can you download from Google Drive with view only?

Hello:Can I just use Google drive to download a spreadsheet and put it on an FTP site with that folder/file name? (Not changing any of the data). Then I can link to it from a page without downloading? I really don't want to change any data. Just be able to upload the file to a certain path.

When I try a similar approach, I get an error message about changing permissions. And when I take a zip out of it shows as not having the correct permissions. Is there an easier way to do what I need?

You have to use a web interface to work with Google Drive files. The 'save' button does NOT take a path parameter for the file you're downloading; but you have to specify the path where you want to store the file in your Google Drive web-client.

It isn't possible to modify anything while viewing a Google Drive document; it's a requirement of security features of the cloud-storage system. The same would be true of your own server, for example. When you want to store a file on your machine, it can't contain other data. So it has to be either "all or nothing."

If you need to store a .docx or .csv file, you have to use the download option (ie the red button in the document browser) because there is no .zip, .xls etc. Type extension available to indicate such things.

If I understand you correctly, there are two paths to solve the problem. 1) To use the download option as you described, and not make the change to any data in the doc, then all you need to do is to store the file somewhere on your system or local network drive.2) On a different path, you can go to google drive, create a shared link, and make your web app connect directly to the link. (Note the only requirement is that you need the authentication information - userID, passcode, and a valid OAuth2 token.)

Which path you choose depends on several factors, including how often you are making changes to the data (does the Google Drive service allow multiple revisions?). Is this right? Let me know if I'm explaining it badly!
