Is Unfriended: Dark Web related to the first movie?

If the trailer is any indication, Unfriended: Dark Web is an extension of The Invisible War.

In that movie, two teenagers, an attractive high school girl and her more nerdy friend find themselves entangled in a cyber relationship with two mysterious strangers who then start killing the girl's friends and schoolmates. The girl has no idea what the men are after but she doesn't dare end it because she won't be able to play online without someone else knowing. This movie was a surprisingly good horror film that left me wanting more. Unfriended: Dark Web is based on something much darker, though. It depicts a cyber relationship between a bullied teen girl and one of her abusers that takes a tragic turn and leads to her death.

Like you have in your article, the Unfriended Dark Web movie is another one that follows a bullied protagonist. For many, it will only be different because the girl happens to be murdered. However, it's also an interesting twist because her two abusers are the ones from the first movie. What does that mean? Let me explain.

The first Unfriended film came out in 2024 and features David Boyd and Stephen Amell as two students who become entangled in a relationship with a married woman. After it became clear the movie would feature graphic elements and they agreed to keep it PG-13, the studio opted to shoot it in an independent style. The entire movie takes place on a set and it looks like an inexpensive TV movie. All in all, Unfriended is a fascinating example of how making a film on a low budget can look just as good as a big budget feature. While it was received negatively by critics, Unfriended turned a couple of million dollars in its lifetime earnings. Since then, Unfriended went through a major change when it was acquired by distributor Dimension, and they decided to recast the roles and focus more on the story.

In 2024, Unfriended was released and took the Internet by storm. The sequel Unfriended 2: Dark Web followed in 2024 and proved to be a hit, too. Unfriended became what's known as a franchise thanks to its multiple sequels.

Where is Unfriended available to stream?

This week it was announced that the American indie horror thriller Unfriended has reached a distribution deal with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions for its release in cinemas and video on demand later this year. I was lucky enough to catch up with producer Evan Goldberg (Lifetime's The L Word, Scream) this morning to ask him about the film's success story, what he'd change for a sequel and - given its terrifying plot-device - where I'd be safest hiding in an Unfriended movie screening.

Can you take us through the origins of Unfriended, from conception to first screenings at Sundance and SXSW, and then the worldwide screening at Tribeca earlier this week? I always loved telling the story about going to the mall when I was really small and finding the comic shop. I came home with more comics than I could read. It was the thing you were like my dad was probably the coolest dad and my mom wasn't into that stuff. We would drive all over Baltimore looking for cons and comics, which was cool. You see these booths set up across Baltimore in the same mall we drove to with the comics books, all kind of similar artwork. My friend who lived there at the time got me a list of the creators of the art and after looking it up we found out that some of them were working on stuff we knew like The Mighty Boosh and Peep Show so there was a pretty broad range.

Evan Goldberg: It was definitely not a project that was set up by a studio. In college I started meeting a lot of people from the horror genre that had the same attitude of wanting to challenge that, they were coming from a place of self-reflection; the whole why are we making horror movies? kind of a thought. Not me personally, I didn't have that perspective - for some reason I never had an interest in being the guy who tries to kill people.

Is Unfriended available on Netflix?

Netflix has been quite the force for new releases over the past few years.

They've consistently made good decisions about what they should be doing, and that's good business for everyone involved. Unfriended, on the other hand, should have been handled a little differently.

This isn't because the content is great, but because of who wrote it and why. This is especially problematic because the screenwriters, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, had plenty of time to see it was bad and that this is the sort of story that people don't want to see at the moment. They didn't know that the world doesn't care anymore, and, consequently, they took an opportunity away from making something better. But that's only the beginning of their mistake.

A History Lesson. The most obvious factor at play here is that this is in no way indicative of the times. While it's true that we all have friends, it was not the case back in 2024. Facebook didn't exist, and if you wanted to share a photo or video you were forced to use email or snail mail. For some time, instant messaging was the only way to reach people, but that changed as the internet gained its own mass communications medium - namely, television. As a result, it suddenly became popular to not be friendly with anyone. We grew to dislike our friends, instead preferring to hang with people who never bothered us when were alive. That's why movies like this exist now.

The whole point of this is to get you to sympathize with someone who does terrible things. You don't have to like the concept, but by going through the actions of the people being depicted you're supposed to feel something. Instead, you feel annoyance, and, when they stop, nothing. That's not friendship; that's a lack of it. If you really feel for a character like you would in any other movie, then you feel sorry for him or her. For the sake of the argument, let's assume that this movie is meant to be taken seriously. To do this, it would need to be compelling enough that a viewer is willing to say, yeah, I know that guy.

This can never happen because there is nothing there.

Is Unfriended: Dark Web appropriate?

How do you feel about the new Unfriended movie?

I was a little shocked when I first heard that Paramount was adapting the film Unfriended, a horror film about a teen who discovers his parents' murders on the dark web. I had previously heard of the film but I didn't think it was any good. I heard all the other people who felt the same way, and I decided not to bother watching it. But now that I've seen it, I have to say that it's not a very good movie. I mean, I expected better than this. It's just boring.

But you know, sometimes the movie industry can be a bit strange. It's one thing if a movie has a plot that no one can figure out, like in the original Saw films, but it's another thing entirely if they don't even try to make it interesting at all. I think the people who are making movies now need to learn that it's not enough to make a film just because they like the idea of it. If you can't make the story compelling, at least tell us the why and the how. You can't just say that the main character does something and expect us to care what happens to him.

The movie industry is also very strange in another way. They're so obsessed with the special effects and such that they're losing sight of the real reason why we go to the movies. It's not just about the visual effects, it's about the story. The story is what makes the movie worth going to see. This is what drives me crazy when I'm watching a film, because the story is always a little bit too vague. It's almost as if they think that if we don't know what the characters are thinking or feeling, it doesn't matter if we get the story straight. Well, it should matter, because the story is what keeps us coming back.

Unfriended is a perfect example of this. It's so bad that it doesn't even seem like the director tried to make it into a good movie. He just wanted to see what he could do if he stuck to the dark web theme and left the movie as it was, without any story or plot.
