The top-viewed movie and TV show categories on Netflix are a little odd.

It would be surprising if you didn't already know that comedies and dramas are the most watched on Netflix. Yet there's a wide variation of what falls into those categories. If you're curious, we analyzed the data on what movies and shows were most viewed on Netflix.

Why is this data important? Netflix is one of the biggest sources of entertainment in the world. It has millions of users and even more titles to watch at any given time. As of March 2023, there are over 50 million active users on Netflix. This means that they watch a lot of content. With that much content, it's important to understand how they use Netflix, and what categories they tend to spend their time in. This data will help companies like Netflix better optimize for the audience.

What is this data? We analyzed what categories were the most watched by users. This means what movies and shows were users spent the most time watching on Netflix. Here are the top 20 movies and shows:

What else is new? Netflix is constantly evolving, and users are always growing. A couple of years ago, you could only watch movies and shows, but today you can also stream TV shows and watch movies and shows with friends and family. The types of content on Netflix are changing all the time. We wanted to see what changed since Netflix first launched. The data below is from December 2023 to December 2023.

How did this data come to be? We used the data scraped by Netflix's API to collect this data. We chose this data because it was very close to the data scraped by their internal teams. The data contained every movie and show watched on Netflix. We cleaned this data by removing duplicate titles. Each title has its own unique identifier. We also removed titles that didn't have any views. The data only contains movies and shows that are watched, and not how many times they were streamed.

What else do I need to know? This data is specific to movies and shows that were viewed. It does not include shows and movies that were streamed. We only sell the US Netflix membership. So if you are not in the US, you'll either need to watch US Netflix on a VPN or on another country. For example, the German Netflix service is a slightly different version of Netflix and available for US subscribers too (but it's hard to find).
