Should proxy server be on or off?

Should I use proxy server for PSN?

I just played my first Halo 3 online (with a buddy), and our connection was really bad. We only were able to play for about 20 minutes before dropping our connection. It happened almost every time we got in a match. I think our internet connection is good, but I am getting worried that it is a problem with the network connection from my router, and not something to do with my computer. I do not know what I am doing.

My question is this: Should I set up a proxy server on my computer and use that to connect to the PSN? If I did, what would I need to do for this? Would I use a program like Windows Update to update my network card drivers? I have a D-Link DWL-G122 wireless card (using the Netgear WNA-100A adapter) and a Netgear Router. I've just played about 10 games of Halo 3 online, and not once did I have any connection issues. I'm guessing that your router is probably capable of giving you better speeds than your Internet provider. The problem isn't my Internet connection. The router I have is the Netgear N300, which gives me a maximum download speed of 384Kbps (according to the manual). That's really slow considering how much the internet connection in the U. Is costing. The internet provider I use is Sprint, and they told me that they would be upgrading the hardware and software at their end of the line, so maybe they are improving their speeds.

What do you guys think? Should I set up a proxy server to play Halo 3? I also have an Xbox 360, but that's in my room, and I rarely use it. It's the PS3 that I use.

EDIT: I am using Windows 7 Home Premium, the graphics card is an ATI X1900 XT (1GB), and the RAM is 2GB. When I click on Games for PC on my profile, I have the PS3 games listed under Games for PS3. If I click one, it starts downloading it from my PS3, then it pops up an error message saying it can't download the game because of "an internal error" that is not specified. This happens for every PS3 game that I try to download, even though I have the game in my library.

Should proxy server be on or off?

Is it possible to use a proxy server for just one computer? How do you do it? I have a proxy server on my office at home and sometimes I use it to avoid connection problem with my ISP when I'm working from home. Now I wonder if it is possible to use the same proxy server to get internet connection on the mobile (not computer) but from my office at home. I'm using a mobile phone. So I want to connect to the internet from my office at home. Is this possible with a proxy server?
If your ISP allows you to use a proxy server, then yes, it's possible. Most likely it is already set up as a proxy server for your Internet connection.

But you might want to read this article on using a proxy server for your LAN. It has a great diagram for how a proxy works.

What does a proxy server do?

If your internet connection is down and you are on a very low-speed connection (such as dial-up), you may have to use a web proxy. This type of proxy service is provided by companies like Crazydotcom and Fastcrawler to provide temporary access to the internet. For more info about a proxy server, check out our FAQ's.

What's a proxy server? A proxy server is a tool that allows people who are behind a firewall to access some web services through your computer or Internet Service Provider's (ISP's) network connection. The process works by directing traffic from your ISP's network to the Internet through the computer running the proxy server.

Many ISPs provide their customers with the ability to connect through a proxy server as a means to get better performance, such as faster download speeds or reduced ping times. Most proxy servers will allow users to customize the web pages that they see based on which of several known web sites they wish to visit.

How does a proxy server work? A proxy server works much like a public library where people can gain access to resources that are unavailable to them otherwise. All the activity taking place at the public library is done over the public Internet and not behind the protection of the private library's walls. A proxy server is nothing more than a gateway between you and the rest of the World Wide Web. As a result, it's very easy to set up a proxy server on your computer that will act as an easy to use interface to all of the Internet resources that you're looking for.

Why do you need a proxy server? Many Internet service providers (ISPs) such as AT&T, MCI, Sprint, and Earthlink offer customers online services such as email, FTP, and news services that require the use of the Internet and that are inaccessible behind corporate firewalls or other corporate security measures. Proxy servers give these people access to those services from within a company or Internet firewall and thus allow them to avoid restrictions imposed by the ISP or their corporate firewall.

Why can't I use my computer to connect to the Internet when I'm at work? Some firewall systems allow you to connect to any web site when you have access to your company's internal network. However, most companies will have a policy of blocking specific web sites in an effort to protect their computer network from being abused by employees, customers, or outsiders.
