I have used it for a couple of weeks and have put my impressions down below.

The first thing that you might notice is that the app is a little different to other VPN apps. It has a very clean interface with very basic controls - there's no buttons, for instance, to enable or disable things like DNS leaks.

If you tap the app icon, you get to the app screen which has a very simple setup: You get two boxes on the left - a connection and authentication box and a network box. The connection box is to connect to your home WiFi network, but there's nothing to stop you connecting to any network. In fact, you can connect to any VPN server anywhere in the world, which is cool.

The authentication box is where you select which kind of authentication you're using. If you select HTTP-only, that means you are accessing the internet through Opera's proxy server.

You will also need to choose a username and password. The network box is to choose which network you want to access from the VPN server. From the app screen, you can then choose to connect to the VPN server. You can choose any of the above networks, and when you choose a VPN server, you can choose any server from that network. So, if you choose OpenVPN, you can choose any OpenVPN server from anywhere in the world.

If you choose OpenVPN, you can then choose a username and password. When you're connected, you can use the app as usual, with no extra steps. You can surf the web, check email, watch movies or stream content from services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, for example.

The nice thing about this is that, since you don't have to do anything extra, the connection stays as long as the app is open.

What happened to Opera VPN?

I've been using Opera VPN for years, but the last couple of months it suddenly stopped working. I can still see my VPN settings and the icon in the taskbar, but I can't connect to my VPN. It just won't connect.

Opera says: We're sorry, our service is not available right now. Please try again later. And there's nothing more about why Opera VPN is not working.

I've contacted Opera but they have no idea what's going on. They don't even know how many users they have. They don't know how many users had been affected by the problem. They don't know when exactly it started. All they can tell me is: I'm sorry, but we don't have any information on what's going on with our VPN service right now. I'll send you some answers when we have them.

They do say they are working hard to fix the problem, but they don't give any details as to what's causing the problem. They don't even know how many users are affected.

And what about the data that was lost? The worst thing is: nobody from Opera has any idea how much data was lost. A maximum of one gigabyte of data was sent through the Opera VPN network in November 2025. We didn't lose any customer data, and no further data was lost after that time.

What's up with all the downtime? Since the end of November, Opera VPN hasn't been working properly at all. It's been down for a week or two at a time. But then it will come back online.

Why haven't they given us answer? I've been trying to contact them for days. They didn't reply to my emails. They didn't respond to my calls. I've tried to reach them through their support form, their chat system, even by email to their CEO.
