Is DTube safe?
How can it ever be safe?
DTube is the name of a new and fast growing decentralised youtube-like peer-to-peer video sharing project by Bitvista based on the blockchain. So, how it is possible to consider that this platform might be safe?
First of all we are not talking about an encrypted protocol but a public blockchain where the data is stored transparently and can't be changed easily. But in the DTube case we have more reasons to be suspicious: If you visit dtube. You will be able to use it to complete registration in other platforms if you choose to do so. The only difference from a normal youtube website is the Your address and name field which we also check.
It's pretty clear that in some cases there is a problem with this kind of field. So far the creators of DTube tried to explain the situation (even in this article they talked about a possible technical glitch). But maybe, in future the website could provide a way to skip that mandatory field, but in any case they should explain a little bit more about it.
At least for us it's not clear what happened with the two email addresses which the creator of the DTube had sent me. We've already reported both to him and to DTube so we're hoping to receive answer as soon as possible. I would expect at least that he send us the details of these two emails (email addresses and IP addres) so that we could cross-check them.
But also why wasn't that mandatory field filled correctly? Did the creators of DTube forget something here or is there an explanation for that?
Does DTube have an app?
If so, why is it always disabled in the settings?
It seems like the worst case is we get a sub that wants to live and can't get it to work properly.
If he's on Windows 8, there's no DTube app because I don't have access to a desktop computer. When I was in the process of setting it up for him on Android, I ran across the same issue. I'm assuming he's running Windows 10 Pro (it's possible he's got a desktop)
We've got an IRC channel here on the Forum, and that's where we'll direct this discussion. I don't feel comfortable doing that, but if you want you can contact a couple people that are working on the Windows version who will be there between 10:30 and 11:00 EST Thursday. They might also check in here during their lunch break or after (there might be some time between these hours). The people's names are listed here.
We're still working on this, and trying to finalize our plans. The biggest challenge here is compatibility with YouTube mobile and desktop for Android as well as iOS. We were able to work out the technical parts of this, but there's a lot more left for our UI developer/engineer to figure out.
What I want from our team is a quick and simple solution for DTube that lets us keep going as quickly as possible. I have to say that I'm not very happy with the results so far, and my first impression when testing our own DTube with our team was pretty negative.
While working on the Mac and Linux versions we had an opportunity to make it available and share a quick video with anyone with our team who wanted to give it a try. We were able to make a few things happen and they seemed to like it. It's too bad that they're still not comfortable using a website without a toolbar.
I apologize for bringing up such a controversial subject, but I felt compelled to do so since YouTube is all I can think about anymore. We've now established our IRC channel, you can read all about it there.
We've got a couple of videos with more technical details. There's not much information here. We may have some extra stuff up with the developer tools at work, but they're in a very specific area where it's difficult for non-technical people to follow.
Who owns DTube?
On August 6th 2023, after 2 days of waiting in the rain, our friends in California brought the contents of my car to me.
The trunk was full to the roof and the car was soaked inside and out, but the smell of what was inside made the rain worthwhile. A bunch of things were carefully placed into large envelopes and wrapped up with a little twine and paper on the outside.
It all looked like it had taken quite some time to get through whatever it was that I'd given them to bring to me from home. And it was all for me. There were 4 packages that included: 1) my very own copy of The Black Keys' new album and all 7 songs included; 2) a signed picture of The White Stripes that could also be framed; 3) one of the best decks of cards i've owned that was actually signed by both White Stripes Jack & Meg and it also included a signed photo of them in a very well known tattoo shop that they go to from time to time in L.; and 4) an original sketch of one of The Black Keys playing their guitars.
It's a very big deal to receive this stuff. I'm honored to have my own copy of an incredible new Black Keys album as well as the only officially signed and stamped Black Keys thing ever received. The White Stripes signed photo, the sketch of The Black Keys and a deck of Jack White and Meg White's favorite colored Playing Cards are priceless to any fan of those groups. The fact that I was chosen, after many others (that is still pretty impressive by itself), to receive them from the most legendary musicians in rock and roll history is awesome.
It took about 8 hours or so for 3 very excited people from Los Angeles to haul it all the way here to Michigan, where I have had to hide my treasures in a place so private and secret nobody else can discover them. As an added bonus for those who've done this before, we got an exclusive I just wanted to give you a call from Jack White before he sent us back to the car and sent me to bed.
I got home on August 9th around 5 AM and didn't want to wake anybody up to tell them what i'd gotten, so I kept the fact they came over in a secret.
