What is the best proxy server?

Hi, I am new to this forum, but have been using the internet for over 20 years. I have a dual-boot system (Windows XP/Ubuntu 12.04) and a static IP at home. My home router is a TP-Link TL-WR802N (which is essentially the same as the N600). I am currently using OpenDNS which provides DNS resolution and other features. This works fine for me - but I want to find a better solution.

I am running my own network (well, my server runs the network) and my home router is the "server" for the other computers in the house. What I would like is a proxy that will work on both platforms. It must be easy enough for a newbie to set up and not require any complicated config files. It needs to be easy to use and keep track of the proxies that I have set up.

My current experience has shown that the best option is to run OpenVPN on my server, connect clients to it, and then put the OpenVPN server and client on the client machines. Thanks in advance for your help. A few questions: Will my ISP see that I'm using OpenVPN? Does OpenVPN route all traffic through the VPN so I won't be connected to the internet? Can I run this on a laptop? If so, what laptop? I read about Proxmox and it looks like a nice solution, but it looks like it's used by some ISPs to block VPNs. Is this true? What other solutions are out there? I would prefer something that works well and is easy to set up. Most ISPs do not track user traffic, unless you explicitly ask them to. There are several VPN services out there, but if you are using OpenVPN it would be easy to setup. If you are running it on a laptop then you should be able to use a different router, or a desktop with two ethernet ports.

You could also just use a USB WiFi adapter instead of your router.

Are proxy servers illegal?

I'm not really sure how they work but I do know that there are many companies (I can't name any of them in particular) that want people to use their proxy servers to access the internet. There's the free ones that some of you have used and then there are the paid ones where there are other features than access. Some of these companies make you sign up for a 'subscription' if you pay for one.

This is usually done so that you are able to view online sports/other events via their servers. You may need to provide them with either email or phone number in order to be charged. Then every month, you would be sent a bill on your email or by post. They get to charge an amount, such as 5 per month or whatever the price may be.

However, you do not agree to be bound by these terms and conditions and are free to discontinue your account at any time. This is also an example of "shopping". It is not legal. The above mentioned company could easily change the way they do things and start "shopping" against you without you knowing it.
