Is Camellia an American name?
Camellia is an American name, and I'd like to know if it's commonly used in the US.
My friend's first child was born recently, and her son was named Camellia. He's about 1 month old. My friend is Canadian, and she's known me for a long time, so I'm not saying that I expect her to choose such a common name for a baby, but I have no idea where it comes from. I am curious to know if it's an old American name or not.
I haven't found any sources online, so I'd be interested in hearing other people's opinions on the origin of the name. Thanks! Interesting! I've never heard of a baby named Camellia. I know my sister named her second child (who is now 7) Amelia, after her grandmother Amelia. Both are uncommon names but still pretty common.
I think that your friend may have been looking for a nickname for her son, as Camellia isn't necessarily his full name. My husband and I liked Camellia as a nickname for our first son because were thinking about him as a little girl, but the name has no significance in our family.
If your friend meant to call her son camellia, then it's a unique and lovely name. A friend of mine named her first baby girl after one of the characters in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I didn't know she'd named her child after a book at the time, but I thought it was a cute idea.
My daughter was named after one of my favorite poets, so she's my Poet's Daughter. I don't know if it's any less common than other poems-named daughters. I don't think it's any more common than a name chosen out of a book of poems. It might actually be more popular than a name out of a book of poems.
I have no idea where the name comes from, but I wouldn't say it's uncommon. I have some cousins named Camellia, and I know they're popular. If you ask me, the name sounds a bit like a play on words - my grandmother used to call her children Catherine and Camellia when they were babies, and that stuck with me.
