Which is the fastest free VPN for Android?
I have the need to get data from different locations and the last free version of our VPN (Proton) seemed pretty fast. Since then we changed to NordVPN, but are there any others out there that you can recommend? It does not matter if it is mobile/smartphone/tablet based, as long as it will work on my 4S without problems. Also, do they use open-source, or maybe something that the NSA can not tap into or something like that?

But I think u don't want a vpn that will be blocked by the government and you only want to make sure you internet won't be blocked while u traveling. What I recommend is to use a VPN service with unlimited data (which is not free). You can find some good VPN service in here but I recommend to use NordVPN. As I am on the road at least once per month, I use NordVPN and I am very satisfied about it. They have an amazing speed and also very friendly user interface.
A few extra tips: Try to install OpenVPN server on your computer and connect to this server with OpenVPN client, it will let you download your data, and you don't need to worry about your privacy if you encrypt data on the VPN server. Set a static IP address, not a dynamic one. If you set a dynamic IP address you will connect to the same ip over and over again. Don't use dynamic IP if you have a fixed IP address.
If you can connect with OpenVPN with encryption, try to setup PPTP instead of OpenVPN. It's usually easier to use OpenVPN instead of PPTP, so try to get your router to support OpenVPN connection and configure it to connect to your OpenVPN server. Your router can't block OpenVPN (which is what PPTP is blocked by) but you need to allow incoming traffic on your router.
Install VPN client on your android phone. The built in VPN client from Android are usually terrible. If you have a real VPN client, configure it to connect to your VPN server. It should be easy to connect to the server, it has an "enable" button.

Why? Your performance on a VPN server greatly depends on your device and your Internet connection. The device that is used to test the performance of your VPN is often called the test machine. The Internet connection you use to test your VPN is often called the test network.
A VPN server is tested using the latency ping test. The latency ping test pings from one computer to another computer through a VPN server. The latency is measured in milliseconds. In the ping test, you will have a test machine send ping requests to a server and then the response times will be measured. The test server can be both a web server or a dedicated test server. You can either test the latency between two remote web servers or between a dedicated test server and your remote web server.
Why not use my VPN? I have tested the latency and the download speeds of many VPN servers from different locations. You should try my suggestions if you are willing to try your VPN servers from different locations.
Note: Your test machine should be fast. I recommend that you use your laptop or desktop computer. My tests were done using an Intel i5 desktop computer. I tested the fastest VPN server at my university campus. It took about 5 minutes for the results to come up and the results showed that I had a maximum of 0.2 ms latency on the ping test.
