Is it worth it to use a travel agent?

I see that the cost of flights around America is now almost as much as it used to be a few years ago. Is it worth using a travel agent? Why? Or do we all (well, most of us anyway) make our own arrangements. I do the latter mainly. It gives me some time to explore some of the smaller towns in North America on my way home from the West Coast of the USI have flown the whole of the US (twice) without having any agent other than an airline to make the whole process so far smooth (the two times were Delta/US - and United), a hotel booking (also Delta, a month before departure) and the insurance (United too).

This was done by booking with Delta a long time ahead, because in the end I wanted to stay a longer time in New York (in the fall). This required changing a flight from Atlanta at that time of year. At the time it was booked, there was a delay with an earlier scheduled flight, because of heavy weather in the northern states (as I recall). Delta then made it easier by offering me a seat that would take me from Chicago to St Louis - where I could change for NYC easily enough on another flight - but I took it. So this is where Delta helped me out well! This, however, doesn't count for the cost of a ticket, etc. The reason I did it myself was because of timing. If I had gotten to New York one day late, or at the wrong time, I would have missed something I wanted to do in New York.

If you book more than 3 months in advance, I think you get the better prices - as it seems a little harder to book if things really don't work out right. For me, the benefit of using an agent is because I need them to make sure the airline will allow me into the country and that my flight(s) are on-time; especially the last one, when its easy for things to go wrong. So, in fact, its not use, more like need.

Its definitely worth it. We use one called Thomas Cook. I've gone once on their trips and a friend of mine went with them a couple of times on vacations they arranged for her.
