I've been a member of Netflix since it first arrived in Canada and everything on the site and the app work for me. Did Netflix remove its free trial?

We've spoken before about Netflix not becoming a victim of their own success, having come up with an absurdly cheap strategy that was an absolute flinger. Per Samsung, to get: If you can get an iPhone, iPad or Android device, you can get a free 1-month Netflix subscription. As long as you aren't buying a new Samsung TV and play in the living room, you can stream for free starting on July 2nd. For us, it's obviously a step in one very damaging direction.

Now, having only recently found myself in a position to kick the month of free trial to the curb, I'm back to having to borrow a rental DVD a night until the month is up. As one of many people in the same boat, I assumed that Netflix's continued success never came to a crossroads until it was absolutely forced to. The arrival of streaming as a viable alternative is the shove in the fact that they need to make a change. It's forced to acknowledge that offering a complimentary month of service doesn't fit their future expectations. It's probably not as good for them if you believe how they spin it, but YouTube's free trial makes it clear that a month of free service isn't necessarily good product placement.

The first time I played with Rules of Engagement, it seemed like a beautifully derivative homage to Homicide and the entire TV procedural genre. Kevin Williamson had shown he knew how to write character-driven dramas for television in Frisky Dingo, but he also knew how to write comedies that could carry the dramatic weight of any of the three. While I have enjoyed watching it a lot, I'm not one of the fans that thinks it's one of the best ever. It even had problems I loathed in certain story threads, and it seemed to be a showcase of career-mingling that could be done right and wrong.

Realistically, though, it didn't need to become that good to succeed selling over a million units. Crafting a great story, cast and tone from its unique viewpoint told a delightful and engaging story.
