Do Amazon Prime members get Netflix for free?
No, though it's an attractive perk available to most.
I haven't yet had a chance to try out Netflix On-Demand Streaming, a service Amazon Prime members receive that makes it easier to watch some of their favorite TV shows and films at the press of a button, but I'm looking forward to finding out what's up with it (plus if I can make use of my Amazon Unlimited trial credit to get started). A bit of background: Amazon announced its entry into the on-demand streaming space in June, but now Prime members can actually begin watching some of their favorite movies and series through Amazon's new Instant Video streaming servicethough they're missing most of Netflix' hit roster. And now we find out that Amazon is selling a bunch of new HD TV sets as part of an effort to get its Prime membership in more homes.so why isn't it just letting us join via existing accounts?
"That way we get into a much deeper relationship," said David Hovis, a spokesman for Amazon Studios. "The consumer has made a long-term commitment to Prime."
In the age of DVRs and On Demand services like Hulu and Netflix, where is the room for another streaming video playera competitor, moreover, that's not even in the same general area of physical space, with the exception of perhaps HBO Go? And if Amazon's goal is to become a one-stop-shop when it comes to getting your online digital media consumed, why should you ever even visit another site's services, other than your bank or your utility provider? (I mean, sure, you might subscribe to Netflix to stream the old-school DVDs you own, but are there too many movies and TV shows from studios to justify such a huge investment? Also, I feel a little dirty just suggesting that.) And don't get me wrong, I love On Demand. My first impulse was to say "why don't you guys just let people take advantage of the same benefits that Netflix offers?" when I heard about Amazon's new streaming servicesparticularly since many would argue that On Demand is what made Netflix successful.
And that's a really good point. I also love On Demand, so don't think I'm discounting its advantages. But if I were Amazon, I'd think very carefully about how this would fit into the plans and aspirations of its Prime membership.
