1) There are many ways to earn money from graphic design. You can start out at the bottom with a company that needs brochure designs or logo designs and then work your way up. Or you can have a 'real job' (but not 'stable') and learn graphic design. If you do choose to work at a 'real job', make sure you research your company first. Some have very dangerous workplace environments where even if you don't do anything wrong you can get hurt or end up with a bad reputation.

2) You will learn much more if you work for yourself. Graphic design is something you can start practicing today. You need nothing but a computer.

3) Don't worry about your mother. Her opinion is irrelevant.

4) Learn the basics of graphic design by starting at the bottom with brochure and logo design and work your way up. Don't use the design application your mother suggested since its too difficult.

You do not want that work to be handed off to a 'Guru' Friend, as the client has no control of the output or the delivery. You may feel like you are getting 'freebies' but at what price: a client who does not understand, nor trust your work, is not a valuable client. The client wants to hand off his problem, not his responsibility.

Can a student be a graphic designer?

I am currently in college, and I am majoring in Graphic Design, but I feel like I am lacking in the world of Graphic Design, for I have not had experience in it.

Re: ? This is a common question, and I'm glad you asked it here. The answer is yes, but there are a few considerations. First, you will need to know what you don't know, so if you really want to be a graphic designer, and you know you don't know how to do X or Y, you will need to study them so that you can figure out how to solve the problem. If you only know how to use a computer and can't draw very well at all, you can still go into graphic design. You could do web design, or anything that involves using Photoshop, Illustrator, and other graphics programs. Just because you don't know how to draw, doesn't mean you can't do a job in graphic design.

I agree with the other person. There are many different types of graphic designers. If you're looking to be a high-level graphic designer, then you should probably start off as a computer programmer. If you're looking to be a web designer, then you could get a basic understanding of programming (just enough to make some website).

In my opinion, a graphic designer can be just about anything. You could be a graphic designer if you know how to use a computer and you have a great eye for art. It's a big wide world.
