How do I unblock a website at school?

My friends and I have recently been given the responsibility of unblocking websites at our school.

The school has blocked facebook, youtube and other websites because of the amount of inappropriate content on them.

The issue is, we don't want to block these websites at all costs because it restricts the students' opportunity to be able to access the internet for work. I would also like to mention that we are a Christian school which does not condone anything "questionable" and the decision to block certain websites has been made by the principal.

What are some ways to explain to students that we don't want the children to have to use "inappropriate" sites? How do I discuss this with them when they ask me why we don't want them to be able to use the website? I am not going to post comments because I can't say anything in the comments that wouldn't be taken out of context or as a snide comment. But I know some teachers would be able to answer your question better than I can! As someone else has said, if you can't answer this one, then you should probably not have this responsibility. It's a tough balance and I feel for you.

Your best bet is to come up with a way to explain it to the students without them thinking that you are in any way condoning this content. Some schools ban books, and I assume you are not banning something that the students don't need to read. If you did allow students to read books with questionable content, you might have a similar issue. Instead, make it clear that they are blocking a website that is providing inappropriate content and a number of students are having trouble accessing the content. Then, make sure that you can back up your position. For instance, explain that they can block anything on the internet and you just want them to block those that provide inappropriate content.

I'm pretty sure that when you're a student at a Christian school and you start seeing inappropriate stuff pop up on your FB, you'll notice that the school blocked it. So while there might be an exception, the school isn't likely to put up with it for too long.

You're probably going to have a discussion with each class where you set out what you want them to do, but basically you're going to have to agree to disagree.
