Do people recommend working at Glassdoor?
Glassdoor is a job and salary review website for employees, employers, and recruitment agencies. It collects anonymous feedback on companies and reviews from employees who have worked at those companies. Some people recommend this site as an alternative to other job search and resume sites.
I've been reading all these reviews of Glassdoor lately and have come to the conclusion that they are unreliable. Can you list a few of the things that people don't like about Glassdoor? Most of the reviews I've read have been negative, although a few have been positive. One reason people do not want to post a positive review of their employer is that the employer is more likely to view the review as negative. Glassdoor doesn't ask for a review unless you click to comment on the post. Therefore, many employees think twice about posting a positive review because they fear that their employer will then view the review negatively. On the other hand, employers will only review a negative review if it is posted, so it seems to be self-reinforcing.
In my opinion, Glassdoor's reviews are more positive than they should because they allow anyone to post any kind of review, regardless of whether the review is honest or whether the reviewer actually knows anything about the company. I have heard many people complain that they only received one or two salary increases in their entire career, even though they worked for some big-name companies, yet their friends have received pay raises ranging from 6-12% over the past couple of years. They complain that this is unfair and that Glassdoor gives the reviews the benefit of the doubt. Well, a big-name company could be using its size and resources to pump up a review for recruiting purposes. Of course, that is just one possible explanation, but there are plenty of other explanations. I would much rather have objective salary information for myself and others.
Another thing I have noticed is that reviews tend to have a lot of typos and grammatical mistakes, especially with the more casual and informal reviews. I believe that many people find it very difficult to type quickly on a phone while traveling, so they just let their minds wander and start typing whatever comes to mind. Of course, some of these reviews are probably intentional, but I also see lots of reviews from people who are new to the workforce. It would be helpful if someone can show me some good examples of reviews that they found to be of very high quality.
