Does Google Family Link work on iPhones and iPads?
The feature seems to be working fine on iPhones and iPads but I have no idea if it will work for the parents with iPhones and iPads. We have two children aged 3 and 5 so that could be our biggest problem. Please can anyone tell me if they have had any issues?
Comments. Google family link in the UK. I just joined up to Google Family Link and haven't experienced anything negative yet, but of course it's only been a few days! I just use my phone, rather than my laptop or netbook, as my email client. I don't sign in, I just sign up at www.familylink.google.com and log in using my normal google credentials (not gmail). My kids (and the rest of the world) then see my home email address, so I receive emails about Google things (gplus messages, etc.)
The big worry is that if you move away from an area served by a network connection, you're not warned when you return that your access has timed out and requires re-auth. I joined a few weeks ago and have been very happy. Our youngest uses gmail directly, the older two are all set to Google family link. Also, it appears the emails are stored and only sent again once you've re-logged into your account. So, unless your children have lots of friends who are also logging in and sending you lots of emails. It's probably not a major issue.
So, I'd say yes, join Google family link and you should be OK. There are a couple of issues, mostly that everyone now knows what your primary gmail address is. If you don't want to use your primary gmail address as your primary address, then maybe sign up for a new account that is set as the primary address. The other thing to be aware of is that Google is updating their authentication systems in the coming months, and won't be doing so for everyone on the same day. If you have access to one device and are logging in from another, then you'll need to have some kind of fallback system in place.
Can parents use Family Link on Android?
Family link is a free service that allows eligible recipients of Family Tax Benefit A to nominate an SMS provider that will send text messages. The Family Tax Benefit includes a total of 6 weeks paid parental leave for the primary carer of the new baby and 2 weeks paid parental leave for the new baby (for a total of 8 weeks' parental leave).
Eligible recipients can nominate SMS providers using mobile phones, tablet computers, or computers connected to Wi-Fi networks. Nominations must be submitted to SMS Provider on behalf of the nominated recipient.
SMS providers are responsible for processing Family Link invoices. SMS providers have the choice to submit payment based on invoice received or as monthly direct debits.
The Australian Government will make payments of Family Link benefits to SMS providers according to the date on which the nomination form was submitted. Once payment has been made, SMS providers will notify the nominated recipient.
If SMS providers submit payments to the nominated recipient in accordance with their normal policy, then the nominated recipient can expect that it will receive Family Link benefits within 14 days from the receipt of the first monthly direct debit payment from SMS providers to the nominated recipient, unless SMS providers notified the nominated recipient that the nominated recipient has not completed the nomination form in the agreed timeframe. SMS providers can provide Family Link texts for each nominee and they may do so in one of three ways: Direct debit in-full. Direct debit partial in advance. Postal service in full. If Family Link recipients nominate SMS providers for all of their eligible children they may not need to do this separately for each of their children. We recommend that SMS providers consider providing this service directly to nominated family members so they can better manage their bills and receipts.
What does this mean for parents? The first thing to know is that you cannot nominate any organisation or individual as a SMS provider. If you do not nominate someone else and receive the full payment, then you cannot nominate another person in the future.
Does Google Family Link work for children over the age of 13?
Can any child in America register for a child or spousal account if they are under the age of 13? There are many Google Family Link questions on this site which are very easy to get wrong. Here is one: Can you register for Google Family Link if you are over 13?
A Google Family Link user (not affiliated with Google, by the way) posted on the Groups sub-section of this site in October 2018: Google Family Link does not allow children to add their own accounts. Children under 13 cannot use Family Link at all. The only time you can see kids' photos from other accounts is when they want to share a photo album with you, such as from an Instagram account. They can't add an email address or anything of that nature.
And: It should be noted that there are plenty of kids with accounts. There was a recent article that reported one kid at Google has thousands of photos on Google Photos and they haven't added them to their family link. I have a feeling that the problem stems from parents uploading photos and not letting their kids add them. Kids don't want to share their photos with their families. Parents don't want to share their photos with their kids.
The Google Family Link question remains confusing to many, even after reading the above two posts. Is it okay to add a child's Gmail account to Google Family Link? As long as your primary account, whether that is a Google Family Link, G Suite, or Gmail account, is set up with appropriate privacy settings, there is no issue with adding your child's Google Family Link account to your primary account. Just follow the instructions below. And yes, you can make this change now, before your child turns 13. If you want to add a child's Google Family Link account to your primary account after they turn 13, you will need to change your settings once they turn 13.
How to Add an Account to Your Primary Account. First, click on your main accounts link (see below). Then click on the child tab (see below). On the next page, click the add a new account button (see below).
Why can't I see my child's device on Family Link?
I have three children on Family Link. I'm in the UK, and I have paid for their Family Link accounts.
I created an account for each of them, and I am now able to see my kids' device in the Family Link settings. When I go into each of their accounts, I can see their device, and there is a "Add" button. When I click on it, I get an error message:
Unable to add the device due to authentication error. Why can't I add any devices? The answer depends on which of the three accounts you are trying to add the device to. If you are trying to add the device to the account that was activated when the account was first created, then you won't be able to add the device. If you are trying to add the device to the account that was activated after the account was first created, then the device may be in use by another child. In this case, contact your child's child services department for further instructions.
If you are trying to add the device to the account that was not activated when the account was first created, then the device is most likely registered in the name of the account's parent, and not the child. You will need to contact your child's child services department for further instructions.
Your kids' device was last online on: The device that was last online on the account that was activated when the account was first created will have its device status set to "Connected", while the device that was last online on the account that was activated after the account was first created will have its device status set to "In use". I don't understand how it works. The system assumes that if a child is logged on to Family Link, then the parent is not. That is why the Family Link settings ask if the child is online or not. If a child is logged on to Family Link, then the parent is logged on to Family Link.
Because of this, Family Link will not let the parent add the child's device. If the child's device is already registered in the name of the parent, then the parent will need to log off from Family Link before the child's device will be available to be added.
How do I rename a child device in Family Link?
To rename a child device, simply select it, choose Rename on the top menu and you're ready to go! You'll notice that when you do this, the parent device gets a new link for the child. If you try to login to both devices at the same time, you'll notice you're no longer able to get on the parent device and are asked to log in on the child device instead. You can always log in with another device once you've renamed the parent to a unique name.
Once you rename the parent, you'll need to get the old unique name to use for the new parent. We have instructions for this below, but in short, just go to Settings > Apps > Data & sync. Find the child (you can sort by "Link Name" as well if you don't know which one you want to restore) and then look for its icon to get back the name.
How do I rename my primary Android tablet? To rename a primary tablet, simply select it, choose Rename on the top menu, make sure no child devices are currently in Family Link, and you're good to go! Find the child (you can sort by "Link Name" as well if you don't know which one you want to restore) and then look for its icon to get back the name. Why do my apps sometimes not show up when I tap All? The All menu only contains any items if they are also pinned. When you go to Settings > Apps, you will find an option to pin items. If you want to force an item to appear in this menu, you can do so, even if it isn't pinned. Go to the All category on the top menu, right-click on the item, and select Pin from the popup menu.
