When you open the URL in your web browser, your web browser is actually communicating with the server through this IP address, as if it was the original IP address that you would have if you were on that computer. This proxy URL can be used to access different sites, just like the IP address of a computer.

What is a Proxy Server? A proxy server is a server that is used to help out computers that are trying to access a site that is not publicly accessible, and this server helps them by routing their requests to the correct destination. How do I connect to HTTP proxy?

I am using an HTTP proxy to get web pages from work. I have a windows machine and an iPhone, both connected to the internet via wifi to their respective ISPs, my work router which has a built in http proxy set up with squid. I can ping the IP of my work router successfully and get back the data that the router should serve me.

Now when I try to get webpages such as google.com, I cannot get to the website. It shows the DNS error: could not resolve host. What I found out is that when I try to ping www.com, it resolves to 1.0, which is the IP of my work router, and not 8.8 (which I think I got from my iPhone). So what is the problem here? Why do I get the DNS error even though I am able to connect to my router's IP successfully? Am I missing some setting?
Note: my iPhone uses 3G, while my computer is using Ethernet. Edit 1: I set up my iPhone using Network Preferences -> Settings -> General -> Reset > Reset All Settings. This reset all my network settings including setting up the proxy. After reset, when I tried to access google.com it says: "Reachable But Unavaible"
In order for your phone to work you need to do the following. First off you need to use a browser which supports HTTP Proxy. After that if you want to use a 3G connection you need to set the IP address for a Proxy server. This would typically be on the router. The way you can do this is by visiting a webpage which has information about how to configure it to support proxy usage. You can see an example here.
