I am currently using my phone and netbook with a 3G connection to the Internet but I want to switch to an ADSL line. My question is, how can I monitor my internet data usage on both devices? I guess it's not as simple as using an app to check your bandwidth (using an app like NetMon or similar) as I'm using an ADSL connection that has been connected via ethernet cable. If there was a way to do it with the ADSL connection would that be enough or would I need to change the configuration of the netbook so it uses an ethernet connection to my router instead of connecting via WLAN to my router (which is where it's connected at the moment)? I have heard of programs like PC Monitor and Bandwidth which allow you to see the current speed you're connected to. They will also show the current amount of data being used. Can these programs monitor the connection? If not, is there another way I could monitor the data usage?

Hi! You may want to try using the program WebCheck. It is a free app that allows you to connect your computer to the internet wirelessly through your wifi card. You can then monitor how much data your computer is using and when it is using most of the data.

Thanks for the responses. I've tried a couple of the programs but they don't seem to be working for me. PC Monitor displays the data rate as 0kb/s but when I go to the Network and Sharing Center under the Settings tab, it shows the data rate as 5.1 kb/s.

I found a program called Bandwidth, but the website is down and I don't know if it will work with my connection. I think I'll just use my phone and netbook as I only have them for when I need to send a text or check a site.

Is there a free version of GlassWire?

I have a laptop without a HDD, and I want to install a basic security software on it so I don't spend the money to install the full GlassWire package.

? Cheers! The closest you can get is to download a free copy of Windows Live Firewall for USB but it is very limited in functionality. Most people can probably get away with installing one antivirus utility which includes some form of anti malware software but it is still better to have 2 or 3 on your device for optimal protection.
