Is there an iCloud email account?
The official explanation given to my wife when she enquired, "what will happen if I get rid of my Macbook but cannot remove the mail account"? and was given the line "This is a free email account. If you want an email address with no spam, get an iCloud email address and add your old email to it." would not have satisfied her (or, frankly, me, as I understand things better than "my" wife). We have a Gmail account that we use through the GMail app on our iPhone/iPad (which is synced so we can access it on any other device where we happen to be) and that has an inbox view that makes it easy to see what email is new and what needs checking.
There is a new iCloud feature that looks interesting: the use of MobileMe and Mail, presumably via Mail or an App (probably as an overlay, so that the Mail icon always shows up on the Mac-on-Mac system), in particular: Apple has been working to create more opportunities for email users outside of a local PC with features such as iMessage, Calendar, Contacts and Notes that are delivered from iOS and Mac devices straight to a smartphone or tablet, saving users the time and headache of syncing calendars and contacts with a computer. Now Apple is introducing another option. In Messages on Mac (M-M), an all-new version of iMessage for Mac that Apple introduced at the WWDC keynote, email accounts can be added directly from any iPhone or iPad device.
This doesn't sound like a big thing to me: why should I change from using GMail now and again? I expect it to be limited to "email" rather than to "all" web services, but that should also apply to "email-in-iTunes". But it's a nice idea and I'm interested to find out how well it works. It seems fairly tightly integrated with what iOS/iOS devices and Mac OS already do. There is, of course, the issue of third-party mail clients such as Thunderbird, which won't work unless you install and configure them. But there's an additional question about whether those other email accounts also get pushed to Mac OS.
