I recently got a new phone and am using the fastest VPN I could find. I am using the vpn to unblock youtube and is working very well, but now that I have switched to it the download speed is really slow. I would agree with your initial assessment that it is indeed faster to connect through a VPN. However, my experience is that it is not always faster.

And the amount of data you are transferring through it. For example, my provider (Optus) has an app called ExpressVPN. It works great as a VPN, and with it, I get a much faster download speed than when I connect through the "normal" network.
