It's been around for quite a while, however, not many people know about it. For those that do, they know it allows you to connect to various VPNs through an L2TP/IPSec VPN. It has a pretty large user base, with the Android OS having supported it for quite a while.

I used it, however, I never really got why people would need it. I never needed it for anything, it was just something I had to have on my phone for some reason. I didn't understand why someone would actually need a VPN that ran over L2TP or IPSec VPN.

I was recently informed that this feature is being removed, and why. So let's take a look.

Why is L2TP/IPsec being removed? For Android devices, we know that Google Play Services uses the IPsec VPN for remote access. Google is no longer allowing apps that use VPN or L2TP. Why? We don't know for sure, however, it is likely they are worried about the misuse of VPNs.

It is also likely because of a change in OpenVPN in Android 4. Some apps may still use the L2TP VPN protocol and it may be available by using ADB (adb shell ipsec) and manually configuring it. However, most of the L2TP VPN apps are now outdated and will be uninstalled when you upgrade to the next version of Android.

We cannot use VPN protocols outside of Play Services at this time and it is unlikely that any provider can add support for L2TP. If you install these older apps, they won't work correctly with OpenVPN or IKEv2.

You can search for L2TP apps and download them but they won't work. Is it the end for VPN? No, there are many other protocols out there that can be used to provide a VPN. There are some that I plan on testing out once I have time, which include: PPTP. SSTP. I think it is safe to say that VPN is here to stay. What should you do? Don't panic. The way Google has changed things, it may be for the best.

Is L2TP outdated?

I'm a new user of L2TP and IPSec and am curious as to what the new standard is for IPsec.

I've been having issues with certain software on the Cisco 860 that make it difficult to configure any IPSec. Is anyone familiar with this new standard? And which Cisco hardware works well with the Cisco 860 as well as the Cisco 801?

We started out by using Cisco routers for both Layer 2 & 3 routing and now plan to use it for both in the future. I would say the standard for L2TP is still a work in progress. It will most likely become the standard protocol/protocol suite used by routers.

Joey-. Thanks for the info, I do have a 821 with an old version of 810 running 860 IPSec and had difficulty using my Cisco IPSec VPN client to authenticate with our cisco 861's. So I thought it would be the 810s not liking something from Cisco when the 810s are older and then this new standard would mean a problem in itself.

I run a Cisco CRS, and a small branch office which is just two Cisco 2611's joined together with linksys 4g routers. We have no problems with IPSEC at all.

Is L2TP IPSec not available on Android?

So I'm trying to set up an office using Cisco equipment and have had some trouble.

It's been running very smoothly so far, and was working fine on Windows. I was able to connect to the Cisco router from home and the same at work, and both of them could see my home machine and vice versa.

I installed Cisco's client software on my phone and tablet and it seemed to work perfectly, allowing me to see all the phones in the office, and from home as well. I now want to set up our VPN from home, and I've decided to use OpenWRT on my Raspberry Pi 3. (yes, I know its a bit of overkill for this) The problem is that when I try to connect from home the router seems to try and connect to itself. The problem only occurs when I use a WiFi SSID I haven't used before, rather than one I do know will work. I can't see any obvious errors in the logs. Here are some images of what happens:
It seems to use a different IP address when it fails than when it succeeds (so there is something wrong there, but it's something else causing the issue than it being an IPSec issue). I did notice that both the devices I tried to connect to were identified by "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client" in the Settings app of Android. And then it just went on to list all my other apps, all of which are working perfectly.

I assume it has something to do with that, but I don't know what. I tried updating any packages and re-installing OpenWRT, but it didn't fix it.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me find a solution to this. First thing is you need to tell your local network you are about to use a new network and give it a new IP address. Then I recommend using the "Network Settings" application of OpenWrt to configure it. You can also open the /etc/rc.local file of your system and modify the ifconfig setting that tells it what to do.
