I've been asked a question I don't quite have answer to, so will answer my own question as others come along. As part of a job recently I had to connect to 3M using a network protocol called the "TCP-UDP over IP Stream Transport Protocol" (TUIP). This is part of their network operating system, and for some reason they have it hardcoded on an iphone app called the MMS SOCKS5 PRO version 5.4.0.

The TUIP protocol is used to transmit data on a UDP socket (datagrams) as one or more streams over a TCP (socket)-like connection, with no acknowledgements given. To send, TUIP generates a stream and inserts it into a packet, that will be sent to the 3M network. When receiving, it will check the sequence of TCP packets for validity and any errors found will throw away those packets, thus breaking the stream before sending new packets. The other side will do the same with the received stream, discarding TCP packets if there are errors in the stream. If all has gone well, TUIP will create a TCP packet with the stream on the transport level, containing the UDP data and an ACK bit to indicate the successful reception.

The app that provides the app uses both TCP and UDP, and can be written so both can use. I would assume there's not much difference in speed or efficiency, as the app just handles streams anyway, regardless of whether the streams are TCP or UDP, with the only differences being how the packets are formatted.

From what I understand, to make it work on iphone you need a special version of the app which provides the SOCKS v5 tunnel required to make the connection, however the version on app store only seems to provide the full version.
