Microsoft has released Windows 10 this week and the world is busy downloading and installing the new operating system onto their computer. Unfortunately, many users don't realize that Windows 10 comes with a very significant new security threat, called the Kernel Driver Signing Policy (KRSP).
I will be installing Windows 10 on several computers over the next few days. In the past, when I have installed Windows 10, I have been able to simply choose the option to not install the latest version of the KB3035583 update (KRSP) into Windows 10. I think this is because I am running Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130 (still known as the 100-series build) which does not contain the latest KRSP updates. However, when I have installed Windows 10 on other computers, I was not able to make that choice. The latest version of the KB3035583 update was installed and I was forced to accept that Windows 10 was now a Red-Ring-of-Fire version of Windows 10.
So, I did what any normal geek would do. I began investigating this new KB3035583 update. I began looking at it from a technical standpoint, and I was quite surprised by what I saw.
You see, KRSP is a very major change in Windows 10. It is the first time in the history of Windows that a mandatory hardware signature has been added into Windows, even for the most basic of tasks. KRSP requires all kernel drivers on the system to have a hardware signature that matches a specific code signature. Let me explain how this all works.
Windows 10 came with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Build 14393) which was a fairly new release of Windows 10, and it only had a very limited number of major security features. Most of these features were about security, such as Device Guard, which protected the operating system from certain types of virus attacks.
