How do I enable SMTP in Gmail?

Is Gmail a pop3 or IMAP?

I've been using IMAP for several months now.

I've moved my data and mail away from my old provider to Google.

I use Thunderbird, but I'm not quite sure whether it's pop or IMAP. If I set up my account with google and configure it for IMAP, does that mean it is pop? If I send messages via gmail, what happens? Do they arrive at my server? Or are they sent immediately to my Gmail account? IMAP has notion of a server and its clients send messages directly to the mail server where they're stored on disk (or so I believe). Gmail then forwards them to you using POP. So if I configure Gmail to use IMAP, I have both POP and IMAP access? That's what my understanding is also. Yes, and also, I suppose it depends on whether you configure Gmail as an IMAP client or an SMTP client. IMAP requires a connection to your ISP, and your ISP is the only way your IMAP email appears in your Thunderbird. That is why a lot of users say IMAP is not worth the headache.

I've got Thunderbird set up for IMAP, but there's no place to configure it. When I click "configure" (bottom left, next to the gear), there's only two options, one of them just says "manage accounts", which is the only option available. Nothing else I can configure.

Can someone please confirm whether Thunderbird has a setting to choose between IMAP and pop3? I need to know how to choose one or the other so that when I connect to my pop3 email account through Thunderbird it automatically sets up IMAP email as well.
