How do I give permission to an app in Family Link?

Question: ?

We've recently updated the Family Link mobile app with a new icon that will bring up all of the information you need to give permission to the app you wish to access. This is great news! But what does it look like and how do I give permissions to a specific app? There are two ways to set permissions to apps: from the Family Link Mobile app and from the Android settings app. How to get there. Once you have your Family Link Family Portal username (if you don't have one, you can sign up here for free) and your password, click the Login button in the upper right corner of the screen. You'll now be taken to your Settings page, where you can adjust all kinds of things, including settings for your Google account. You can access the Settings page by going to your profile page under Family Link and clicking on the gear icon.

Once you're on your Settings page, click the Security & Privacy tab. There you'll find a list of your apps, followed by a screen that says What's On My Device. Click the Show apps using this permission button.

This opens a screen that lists your currently used apps and displays a list of permissions that your selected app requires. Under the list of permissions, click on the gear icon that appears. A screen will pop up asking you whether you'd like to allow the app. If so, select Yes; if not, select No.

Setting permissions is easy, but there's a catch: You can't choose an app if you're only connected to Family Link with a Chromebook, or if you don't have an app on your phone that you wish to grant access to. This is because Chrome OS needs your permission in order to use apps. Without your permission, apps can't run or communicate with your devices.

If you're on a Chromebook. If you only have a Chrome device connected to your Family Link portal, you won't be able to choose an app on your phone when logging in.

How do I always allow apps on Family Link?

I have apps on my Android tablet that I allow on Family Link.

Sometimes I just open the app and it says "Allow access to your device" but other times it asks me to go through the sign-in process (using my Google account) and I can't remember doing it before. How do I permanently set up my phone/tablet to allow apps from Family Link? I don't want to lose my data if I mess up. Sometimes I just open the app and it says "Allow access to your device" but other times it asks me to go through the sign-in process (using my Google account) and I can't remember doing it before.

Thanks. I think that is related to how your Android tablet has been "signed in" with your google account. Yes, I see that now. I assumed I had gone through the same sign-in process for the Family Link app that I did for apps on my Android tablet, but I'm now seeing that it could be a separate process. I have to sign into my google account to allow apps from Family Link, which I've always done. The only difference is that the Family Link app is installed on my phone instead of on the tablet. Thanks for the help! Sometimes I just open the app and it says "Allow access to your device" but other times it asks me to go through the sign-in process (using my Google account) and I can't remember doing it before.

The steps are the same. They should look something like this: Go to the Settings. Then select Apps. If you tap on an app, it will open the screen where you can grant permission to access your device.

Note: If you're not signed in to your Google account, you'll be prompted to sign in when you click on an app.
