How to allow installation of apps from unknown sources in Family Link?

How do I let my child install unknown apps?

My 5-year-old has been asking for an app for her Nintendo DSi, but I won't install any app that I don't know the purpose of.

However, my husband has let her install a ton of games (we have more than 20 on the SD card). Her favorite one is Tiny Thief. Can someone explain the difference between "Unknown" and "All" and what should I do to get my kid to play things like Tiny Thief without my permission?

Answers. If I was your daughter, I would've grown up to be a very rebellious teenager. Lol. Anyway, I'm glad you're letting her play those apps with her brother, not because she's 5 but because she's being smart enough to know that those apps are going to teach her some cool stuff, not to mention to make her a lot more responsible as an adult. I'm sure your son wants to have fun too, but he's not as mature as his sister is because he's a 5 year old.

I think I could give a pretty good reason why you should install apps on your kids phone that she is allowed to install. First of all, I don't think it's a matter of me being a parent vs your husband being the parent. Yes, I'm a parent and yes I do have a say on what my daughter is doing. My husband just doesn't care about what I want or don't want. He's her father and he's the one who installs apps on her phone. I respect his decision as a father and a husband. I'm just giving him a hard time as a spouse.

Anyway, the reason why I think you shouldn't install apps you don't know the purpose of on your daughter's phone is because: 1) She'll learn to be irresponsible. 2) People who find their phone stolen are less likely to look up the information on how to delete apps they don't need. That's what happened to my daughter when her phone was stolen last year. She didn't know how to delete the apps from her SD card, she was too shocked to realize it was lost. She got a new phone but didn't realize there was a problem with her old phone until she tried to download an app and it asked for an authentication code. I had to ask her to do a factory reset so she could regain access to her original apps, etc.

How to remove parental controls restrict downloading of this item?

Hannah is playing a game with her friends in her room when she notices that her phone is moving by itself across the room towards the door.

She tells her sister, who runs to her bedroom and opens the door. She discovers her mother lying on the ground unconscious outside the room. Hannah rushes over to her mother and helps her stand up.

The girls have been grounded and banned from seeing their friends or going to their place, and Hannah must stay in their room all day long. They need to find someone to call to help, but they have no idea who the local doctor or pharmacy is. After an hour, Hannah and her sister go to find help. On their way back home, they find a young couple arguing about whether or not Hannah should be allowed to stay with them. The arguing couple says that they just need to tell a third party to bring more beds, rather than just calling the police. They agree to stay with Hannah and call Hannah's father for help. When Hannah's father answers the call, he says that he and the couple need to take Hannah to see her doctor. Hannah's parents argue, and Hannah calls the couple and tells them to hang up the phone and not to answer if their number comes up on the caller ID.

After they hang up, Hannah's mother says that her phone number will still appear on their caller ID, and her father will know what happened. They need to buy a new phone line, but after a failed attempt to call a store for assistance, Hannah runs outside. Her sister comes and tells her to run inside and grab her things before her father calls the police. As they rush inside, they pass the couple again. They tell Hannah that she can't go with them because they need to tell a third party about the situation. They try to get in her way, telling her she can't go there. They follow her to her house, and Hannah says that the only person that she can go with is her father. When the couple tries to stop them, her sister pushes them away. Hannah's dad and the couple take Hannah to a hospital. She can't remember anything from the last 2 days and has lost 30 pounds. Doctors tell Hannah and her family that Hannah is in shock and needs to be sedated. The last thing Hannah remembers is going to school and then waking up.

How to allow installation of apps from unknown sources in Family Link?

I use Family Link.

I am currently able to install applications from authorized websites by following this article. But I do not have a way of allowing installation of apps from unknown sources.

How can I resolve this issue? You can't at the moment (it's a work in progress). The only way you'll be able to do this is if and when it's added to Windows itself, so that it could be used with Family Link. The reason you're unable to install applications from unknown sources today is probably because developers aren't yet ready to submit apps to the Windows Store from outside the app publisher's corporate domain.

How do I download without Family Link?

If you want to download the game without Family Link you need to sign up for an account.

You can download with your Google play account but only 1 device per ID. To sign up for a Google account go to and create an account there. If you do not have a Google account then create one here:

Why can't I download the game with Family Link? The latest update is in development and will be pushed out soon. Unfortunately if you try to re-download the game it won't work because Family Link will be blocking you from doing so. Once the updates are released this issue will be resolved, however if you already downloaded the game you'll need to re-download it.

If you see a message that says This is not allowed it's because the developers have not given Family Link permission to allow this. To grant this permission go to Settings > Apps and scroll down to Allowed > Access all.

You can download the game without Family Link by going to Play Store > Search for the game and you'll find it here. What are Family Link permissions? These permissions are used to ensure the game has access to information on the user's device (such as which game notifications were received). All players must agree to the privacy policy of the game before it's permitted to request these permissions.

What can happen if I'm not connected to Family Link? The game uses permissions and the app can function properly if your device is connected to the internet but if it's disconnected then the game will display Unable to connect or similar message. Why don't I see the game on my Family Link enabled devices? Sometimes the games may take a long time to load up so make sure to give them some time. We have a lot of games and updates are released all the time sometimes it can take a while. Try the game again later or refresh the device. You can manually unblock the game if needed as we will mention the method below.
