Is ZeroTier a VPN?

Not really? Well, sort of?

ZeroTier is a product that is used to set up secure private network on top of Internet. This makes it a VPN at some level but it works at more than that too. What? How? Here is the long and short of it: ZeroTier makes it easy to set up a private network inside your enterprise (or perhaps for your whole country if you are very dedicated) and it lets you securely connect computers and mobile devices inside the network. Yes, all of that just by providing you with IP addresses! All I wanted to do with ZeroTier was to be able to have VPN access at my office but after playing with it for a few hours, I was hooked.

ZeroTier is not a VPN as in OpenVPN but it does provide VPN-like encryption of network traffic using AES256 encryption and is fully compatible with a typical VPN client (eg OpenVPN). But at heart, ZeroTier is a way of encrypting your traffic on a peer-to-peer basis so that you can see what is going on inside your network. Once you are running an open network inside your firewall, you then put all of your VPN behind it (and the client can be either open source (such as OpenVPN) or enterprise grade (which ZeroTier will help you set up). You have all of the benefits of a VPN without the hassle of dealing with VPN software on your client computer, VPN servers, configuring port forwarding etc. (if you use Linux, yes, using iptables or equivalent might not be the best choice).

If that sounds interesting to you, let's jump right into it! How To Build A Peer To Peer Secure Network From Scratch? We are using ZeroTier 1.0 at the moment. As of this writing, there have been a lot of features and enhancements released to the stable version so you can always go with the latest version if you want to go with latest and greatest.

Download and install the latest beta version of the ZeroTier client. Then install the ZeroTier server in one of the computers or mobile devices that you would like to connect to a private network on the Internet.

On ZeroTier, click on the Settings button, then click on the Setup Wizard. The dialog box will be shown for the Setup Wizard.

Where is ZeroTier, Inc.'s headquarters?

It is not in Palo Alto, where many of us are based. It is actually in San Diego, California. (Why not? Because we are working on the next generation of the Internet.)

Is ZeroTier, Inc. A startup? This is a bit of a trick question. Technically, yes, but in many ways, not at all. We are a registered 501(c)(6) non-profit corporation that is headquartered in San Diego.

ZeroTier, Inc. Has been around for almost five years. However, it has only been open source for the last three years. Before that, it was entirely proprietary.

The company started out in 2023 by a group of ex-NASA engineers. It started with a small staff and a single product: an easy-to-use VPN service that works on any operating system, and is built on open source software. This was a huge success, especially with the first public release. Then, they started adding products to their portfolio, and now have many open source products. The most popular products include a highly scalable VPN service called OpenVPN-in-a-Box, and a powerful router product called OpenMesh.

In 2023, the company started using the term "ZeroTier" for their VPN service. This name was selected to be short and easy to say, while still conveying the meaning that the service allows applications to be separated over multiple network links. The name was created with the help of a team of marketing consultants and is not trademarked.

As a non-profit, ZeroTier is able to focus solely on delivering a quality product. In this sense, ZeroTier is much more like a startup than many "traditional" businesses. However, if you want to know the financials, we're happy to share!

A few quick notes: I've written this blog in the past using a pen and paper. To make things easier, I've just used my iPad to take notes during this video. Please excuse any spelling mistakes!

Here's a timeline of what happened at ZeroTier: 2023 ZeroTier starts as a project with 8 employees and the goal of making secure and scalable network overlay VPN services. 2023 We open source most of the code. We still have a small staff at this time.

2014 We open source some more code. We now have 14 employees.

What is ZeroTier used for?

ZeroTier is used for creating and connecting containers for network service. It also provides a container management system that automatically deploys containers to the most appropriate servers. ZeroTier is based on container technology, such as Docker. It works by sharing the resources of a physical machine, thus it can take advantage of all resources provided by the physical server.

What is a serverless architecture? A serverless architecture can be described as a way to organize and run applications without a physical server. An example of a serverless architecture is Google Cloud Functions. This service provides a development platform that allows you to build and run functions that can scale up and down dynamically. The Cloud Functions is managed by Google and it's free to use.

Can I deploy my own ZeroTier services? Yes, you can. You can also run any application (Docker container) inside a ZeroTier container.

Can I host other applications in ZeroTier? For example, you can host web apps, databases, messaging systems, and others. How do ZeroTier services connect to each other? ZeroTier services connect through a network service. ZeroTier Network services are used to communicate between different ZeroTier instances. ZeroTier also includes tools to manage the network.

Why do I need a server to host ZeroTier? You can host ZeroTier on your physical server. However, ZeroTier is based on Docker and it does not require a physical server to run. ZeroTier runs completely in virtual machine on a physical machine.

Can I run Docker on Windows? Yes, you can run Docker on Windows. What is the difference between ZeroTier Network and ZeroTier Core? A ZeroTier Core is an isolated and managed ZeroTier instance. A ZeroTier Network is a distributed network of ZeroTier instances.

How many ZeroTier instances are supported? As of now, we support up to 32,000 ZeroTier instances. How to connect to another ZeroTier instance? You can connect to another ZeroTier instance using the same methods available for a local ZeroTier instance. Can I connect to another ZeroTier instance without a server? If you are familiar with ZeroTier Core, then you should be able to connect to other instances without a server. Can I configure security groups on my server?

Can ZeroTier be trusted?

What is ZeroTier? ZeroTier is a network virtualization software project which provides a virtual bridge across hosts, thus allowing applications and data to move between hosts in the network without the overhead of network switches. Why use ZeroTier? Using ZeroTier, you can save up to 40% bandwidth compared to using physical links. You can deploy a single application on multiple hosts, without having to install it on each host. It is secure because it is not possible to eavesdrop on the traffic between the two hosts. How does it work? ZeroTier's network virtualization software creates a virtual switch between two hosts. The hosts can talk directly to each other, and share their network interface without the need to go through a physical link.

Here is how ZeroTier works: Host A connects to Host B over a physical network link. This creates a physical connection between the hosts. Host A registers with ZeroTier and creates a tunnel. The tunnel is a virtual link between the hosts. The virtual link is used by all ZeroTier clients to connect to Host B.

If the physical link between the hosts is a high-speed link, then the tunnel will be an even better performance than a physical link. ZeroTier clients can connect to the host, and get a virtual IP address for the host. They can then use this virtual IP address to connect to other hosts.

The ZeroTier clients are completely unaware of the existence of the physical link. They only see the virtual link and use it to connect to the other hosts.

The ZeroTier clients can also detect when there is a failure in the virtual link, and switch to another virtual link automatically. Is ZeroTier secure? Yes. ZeroTier is not affected by any security issues that affect traditional virtual networks.

How to install ZeroTier on Linux? ZeroTier is available for many platforms, including Linux. Below are the steps to install ZeroTier on Linux.
