Is NordVPN 100% safe?

We've been using NordVPN for almost 6 months and have only had one issue.

We downloaded an older version of the VPN client from their website before their new website was ready to go live. Their tech support staff was awesome in finding the problem and helping us, but our first call to them happened about 12 hours after we downloaded the old version. This is what they said:

"The security flaw has to do with your system. This means that not only did you download a different version of our software, but your system was unpatched at the time of the download. This means that any malware that may exist on your machine was able to steal sensitive information."

We still use their services for now and haven't had any problems. I've gone through about 50 torrents over the past two months and just today received an email from them saying that we should be on their latest VPN client now, and it's the only one we've used! I would appreciate the knowledge from those more experienced than I in knowing if this issue is common or not.

Yes, they can hack into your machine and read/delete/change all of your information. And that should not happen. But don't forget that you also put this stuff in the wrong hands by using unsecure software.

They really have nothing to gain by doing this. So it could be a bad dream, but when talking to companies you get the feeling that people are understaffed or too lazy to do this job correctly.
